From the editor: About the combat hospital project
AT THE PILOT, we are always looking for ways to make connections between news that's happening around the world and people here in Hampton Roads. The NATO hospital in Kandahar is staffed in part by doctors and nurses from Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, so it provides a powerful opportunity to apply a local lens to the war in Afghanistan.
This series offers a rare view of our military's bravery and sacrifice, and of the hospital staff's heroic efforts to save the lives of soldiers and Marines who have sustained horrendous wounds on the battlefield.
Some of the words and images you will see are graphic. We debated how unvarnished to be in our report. Ultimately, we felt a responsibility to illustrate the heavy toll that this 10-year-old war continues to take.
- Denis Finley, Editor
The series can be found here, beginning Sunday.

on the side of the angels
This is the most incredible piece that I have ever read in ANY newspaper. I am so proud of and amazed by these medical personnel who are true angels working in a hell on earth. They perform a true service to our American soldiers who deserve nothing but the best. I wish I could thank every one of them in person.
thank you!
This is a great first article and I cannot wait to read the rest. My husband is a doctor serving over in Kandahar and to read an article that highlights his service is wonderful. This is a much needed article that every American should read...we have all lost sight of what is happening over there and it has been easy to forget about our young men and women serving this country. Many people also don't know that our military are helping to save the lives of Afghan civilians, mostly innocent children. Once again, thanks for an amazing article.
No, thank *you* and your husband...
Thanking him for his willingness to go there and do battle against Death for these Warriors' lives, and thanking *you* for being willing to lend him to us. You two are among those who epitomize the best of America.
I well remember our own times of separation several years back; it ain't easy, so you deserve our thanks to, ma'am.
