Former Va. Del. Mathieson appointed U.S. marshal

Posted to: Crime Federal Government Nation - World News Politics State Government

Former state legislator and veteran law enforcement officer Bobby Mathieson has been hired as U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Virginia, U.S. Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner announced Friday.

Mathieson was confirmed to a four-year term by the Senate on Thursday night after being nominated by President Barack Obama at the request of the two Democratic senators. He replaces John R. Hackman, who was nominated to the position in 2007 by President George W. Bush.

Mathieson, a Democrat, was elected to the state House of Delegates in 2007 from the 21st District in Virginia Beach but lost his re-election bid two years later. He also has been director of business development for Rileen Innovative Technologies in Virginia Beach.

Mathieson will oversee deputy marshals and criminal investigators whose duties include apprehending federal fugitives and transporting prisoners, protecting the federal judiciary and operating the Witness Security program.

He was a Virginia Beach police officer from 1975 to 2002, retiring as a master police officer. He later held a leadership post in the state Department of Criminal Justice.

Good man for the job!

Hopefully next November the new President will recognize that Bobby is a good man for the job and reappoint him for another 4 years!

Only one more reason to get rid of Obama in 2012

If he were not a Democrat he would not have been appointed to an Obama job. Was he the most qualified? We will never know. He is a Democrat, the only qualification needed. No Republicans need to be considered.

U.S. Marshal Not A Deputy Marshal

Congratulations Bobby! You will do a fine job! What a real gentleman!
We need more leaders like Bobby.

consolation prize

This is a pretty good consolation prize for a guy who served one term before losing to a Republican.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Bobby! A good man for a good job! We know you'll do an excellent job, as you always have. Some of us good people in town support you all the way!! CW

goog ole boy network

The good ole boy always gets the job.

He's not a deputy marshal

The position he has been appointed to is an administrative position, not a field position. Therefore those requirements you cite do not apply to his appointment.

Age doesn't matter for some

To be appointed as a deputy marshal you have to be under the age of 36. This precludes a lot of good people from becoming a deputy marshal. Same with investigator jobs. Guess there is no age discrimination for the well connected though.

Congrats Bobby!

A good man for the job! Appointments are made on both sides of the fence. I'm not a Dem but they did well on this appointment!!!
