Lorraine's Pick of the Week: Buy the ripe watermelon

Posted to: Food Life Spotlight

Forget the tap test. To determine a watermelon’s ripeness, check the color. Ripe melons have a faint bleaching between the stripes. No stripes? Check the underbelly where the melon rested on the ground. It should be creamy white or yellow with no green or brown. And, by the way, watermelon is a vegetable, related to cucumbers. All this from “Lobsters Scream When You Boil Them” by Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough.
