O's rally against anti-gay bullying
Kudos to the Baltimore Orioles. The Tides parent club is the fourth big-league team to release a video that uses players to speak out against homophobic bullying, which has led to teen suicides.
They join the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox in adding to the “It Gets Better” series – more than 20,000 videos have been produced -- that seeks to encourage homosexual youth in the face of intimidation and prejudice. Other baseball teams have videos in the works.
“You should never feel like you need to hide who you truly are,” pitcher Jake Arrieta says in the video, which you can view here. “The Orioles are just one part of a huge team of supporters that are here for you.”
Eight pro sports teams have made similar videos, according to the Orioles release. The effort is commendable, although the irony will be glaring as long as there remains no openly gay athletes playing major league baseball, football, basketball or hockey.
