Police warn of scam calls to cell phones

Posted to: Crime News Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach police have issued a warning about “phishing” calls being made to cell phones.

The calls inform phone owners that their credit cards have been blocked due to fraud, and that they can reactivate them by entering their credit card numbers on the key pad.

The calls originate from outside the country, and use a technology that displays the credit card number on Caller ID, allowing the scammers to grab it and abuse the cards themselves.

not your bank

Don't understand what BoA has to do with anything here. This is not your bank's fault they just dial randomly hoping to get your info, here's another example of a phishing scam which has nothing to do with ones bank: http://www.callercenter.com/866-252-2105.html if you're going to blame anyone blame the scammers!

beware the caller

As earlier commentors mentioned, there is little your bank can do about it, but I would still let them know. They may at least be able to send out a message to their online banking accountholders to warn them or maybe post a message in their social marketing media. There are age-old scams out there and new ones cropping up every day. Rule of thumb; your bank will never call you to ask for your account number or PIN number. If you do not initiate the call, Beware. If in doubt, hang up and dial the bank yourself. I just hope our older citizens do not fall prey to this; warn your parents, folks.

If I don't recognize a

If I don't recognize a number coming in, I don't answer it. I figure if it's important, they will leave a message. If not, well...

People just need to exercise a little common sense when it comes to preventing being a victim of fraud.

Me too

This happened to me yesterday in the a.m. I received a recorded message. I too hit #1 and another message began. Something didn't fell right. I had just used my cards earlier. I immediately hung up and called my bank and told them what happened. I wanted to make sure that my cards and account were okay. What was further upsetting, was their “oh well” attitude. I was even told that there was nothing much that they could do. I even tried other avenues of reporting this. How frustrating! Then people wonder why these types of things go unreported. Then last evening, there was a news story alerting people about this scam. After seeing the story, I thought that maybe now, my bank will pay more attention. Maybe!!!

Sounds you bank with Bank of

Sounds you bank with Bank of America!!

Me Too, Also

I also received one of the calls yesterday, I hung up before the message finished.
There really is nothing your financial institutions can do. They do not know who makes the call and they have no way to trace it. The calls are as annoying to them as to us.
Never respond to the calls, but if in doubt call your financial institution to verify all the activity on your card is yours.

scam

This happened to me yesterday. I was driving so I wasn't able to see the number on caller ID. The recording stated my debit or credit card had been lost or stolen. The only reason I even was suspect was because I had just been to my bank earlier in the day and the teller asked for my card. So I looked when I stopped and both cards were safe in my wallet.

If the callers call with the

If the callers call with the credit card number in the caller ID field, why do they need to ask the called person for their credit card number?

Or are they using this as a means to get hold of expiry date, or the CV2 code?

i think they were saying

i think they were saying when you enter your cc number it appears on the other persons phone, vp should have taken a couple of extra seconds and explained it a little better than they did

Phish Call

Happened to me yesterday as well. Had to push #1 to connect to their security office. I connected just to hear what was being said and hung up. Everything being said was computer generated.
