Beginning Aug. 15, all Social Security field offices will close 30 minutes earlier each day, the agency said Friday.
In cities across Hampton Roads, that means offices will shut their doors at 3:15 p.m. instead of 3:45.
The Social Security Administration is blaming inadequate funding.
"While agency employees will continue to work their regular hours, this shorter public window will allow us to complete face-to-face service with the visiting public without incurring the cost of overtime for our employees," Michael Astrue, commissioner of Social Security, said in a news release. "Congress provided our agency with nearly $1 billion less than the president requested for our budget this fiscal year, which makes it impossible for us to provide the amount of overtime needed to handle service to the public as we have in the past."
Social Security Administration officials are reminding the public that most transactions can be done online or by phone, including applying for benefits, signing up for direct deposit and replacing Medicare cards.
The administration's website is www.socialsecurity.gov. Its phone number is (800) 772-1213.

can you imagine
if George Bush's plan to put the Social Security trust fund money in the stock market had ever gone through?
There would not be any offices left to close early.

Take a lesson from the air lines
Put Kiosks(in 12 languages), in the Lobby and keep them open 24 hours a day if most services do NOT require face-to-face customer service. SSA needs to be run like a business and not the DMV or Post Office. Does ANY government agency EVER try to operate cheaper and more efficiently ????

social security to close early each day
I would hope a major trim in or replacement of senior management is in order. If they can't properly run the Social Security Administration, find someone who can. This is a shear get even with the boss for cutting our budget kind of action and should be dealt with severely.
Politics has nothing to do with it....Incompetence abounds....
Just take one look at the staff when you walk in the door and you'll see at least 1/2 of the problem....most of them literally shuffle their feet when they walk across the floor. And they move EVEN SLOWER when they are filling out paperwork. We were in the office for over 2 hours total. I had everybit of required paperwork and it took over an hour for the Social Security employee to fill out and process the paperwork for my newborn daughters Social Security Card! Really???! If they lose their jobs to automation...they'll get exactly what they deserve!
Senior mnagement is doing just that
Senior management is employing good management skill is minimizing overtime. If you read and understood the article you would have found that the closing was an attempt to give good customer serve without incurring unnecessary overtime. If you have a complaint it is with the republicans in congress who have always waned to get rid of social security.
I was actually right with you
Right up until you accused Republicans of wanting to eliminate Social Security.
