U. of Georgia lineman says he'll transfer to Va. Tech

Posted to: College Football Sports

Virginia Tech assistant Shane Beamer reeled in his fifth commitment in as many months working for his father, head coach Frank Beamer.

The latest is offensive lineman Brent Benedict from Jacksonville, Fla., a former high school All-American who is transferring from Georgia and will sit out this fall. He will be available to play in 2012 with three seasons of eligibility remaining. After suffering a knee injury during his final high school season, Benedict redshirted last year but participated in spring practice.

Before the injury, Benedict was rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, ranked the No. 12 tackle and No. 76 overall player in the Class of 2010. Listed at 6-foot-5, 301 pounds on Georgia's roster,

Benedict claims to be fully healthy now. He planned to visit Clemson and Florida this summer, but after Shane Beamer showed him and his family around Blacksburg last Friday, Benedict made up his mind.

The decision was largely about the opportunity for early playing time. Four of the Hokies' starting offensive linemen will graduate after this season and only two of the previous 40 players who'd signed or committed to Tech were linemen.

"Absolutely, the coaches really feel like I'll be able to contribute next season," Benedict told the Florida Times-Union.

Benedict joins the 19 rising high school players from the Class of 2012 who've committed to the Hokies.

follow up

I am just saying that it's overkill with every waterboy that commits to VT, there are programs in the state that win NC's not conference titles. They are winners, VT has never ended any sports season with a win that produced a nat'l title. Plenty of people will agree and disagree with me but I don't need to tweets all day about the writer sitting around in blacksburg all day doing nothing.

Don't want you to miss

Did you see where we got a commit from a wide receiver out of South Carolina?? Did not want you to miss out!

Va Tech articles in the Pilot

It seems that if one doesn't want to read articles about Va Tech, one should just, you know, not read them.

does anyone know when uva

does anyone know when uva plays william and mary this year?

Paging the Pilot

Can someone please put a stop to all the VT recruiting articles?? VT recruits are 20 times better than JMU and look what that got you. Is App State next?? VT tries so hard to win it all, they are like 7up, never had it and never will.

UVA - 40 National Championships
ODU - 28 National Championships
William and Mary - 2 National Championships
George Mason - 23 individual National Championships and final four
JMU - 2 national Championships
VCU - Final Four
Richmond - 1 National Championship

VT - Zero in any sport, bass fishing has one but a club sport, several NIT tourneys... VT Athletics should be proud.

Nice Response

But I missed the part of when was the last time UVA beat VT in football?
You act as if they do not post when UVA or ODU get a recruit! I truly hope UVA's program in football improves so their fan base will support them.
