Verizon to end distribution of residential phone books

Posted to: Business Consumer - Retail

The new phone book soon won't be here.

Verizon announced Monday that it is ending delivery of residential phone books. Customers will still be able to request a free printed white pages or a CD-ROM version, or find residential listings online.

In May, the State Corporation Commission approved Verizon's request to drop a requirement that it publish and distribute residential listings. It argued that the Internet, wireless devices and other ways of finding phone numbers have made phone books all but obsolete.

Verizon will continue to distribute a yellow pages with business and government listings.

The end of the white pages will begin in Danville with the release of the 2011-12 Danville Verizon Superpages later this month.

In Hampton Roads, the end will come first for the Franklin/Smithfield phone book in August, followed by South Hampton Roads in October and the Peninsula in February.

Customers will be able to order free residential print and CD-ROM versions of white pages directories by calling (800) 888-8448 as each local yellow pages directory begins delivery.

In addition, white pages listings are accessible at www.verizon.com/whitepages.

This information will be included in customers' bills every three months.

Verizon said that stopping phone book publishing will remove about 1,640 tons of paper from the state's waste stream each year.

Phone book use has fallen steeply, New York-based Verizon said, citing research by Gallup that found 11 percent of households used the white pages.

Works for me!

I personally don't use the white pages phone book so that's ok to go as far as I'm concerned. Glad to see that those that still want one will be able to get one by calling and asking. Thoughtful. I do use the yellow pages sometimes though because it's faster to find a business that's near to where you want and such. I wish the powers-that-be could limit it to just one all inclusive yellow pages instead of a bunch of little ones.

tHROWIN THE BOOK AT COPPER

Verizon surely will finally get rid of copper only dialtone in Virginia and perhaps Maryland and Washington DC too by another tax-free spinoff for purchase by another Frontier or Fairpoint. Servicing the customers reasons for calling died when C&P Telephone was devoured by its carnivorous predator NYNEX in 1998 and when MCI was devoured by Verizon, MCI managers taught their new owners all the MCI tricks of the trade for maximizing revenues and minimizing customers. Do you remember hating MCI?

Repair- wait, wait, wait. Verizon is horrible.

Call Verizon for their award winning service. Then wait for 7-10 days for a repair. Ten wait for an additional 3 days for the reschedule.

Verizon is horrible.

Verizon is a horrible company. This proves it. They are cheap.

As Usual

the Va Beach lawyers think they know what everyone wants, such as getting rid of the white page relics. That's why they make such great politicians. Let's make an amendment for the elimination of all written white pages, and spend money doing it.

what are little kids suppose

what are little kids suppose to sit on at the table now when they are not tall?

Hooray!

One less piece of junk to throw away! Every little bit helps and adds up! Reduce, reuse, recycle

No more five pounds of instant scrap? Hallelujah!

Does anyone know if/how I can opt out of the yellow pages book?

Anyhow.....it's a good start.

We're paying for the white pages.

Since they're discontinuing their distribution, why aren't we getting a reduction in our phone rates?

Because...........

Those that advertise in it pay for it. Check the cost of a full page ad and you'll see what it brings in.
