Voters in 4 Hatteras Island villages lift liquor ban

Posted to: News North Carolina

RODANTHE, N.C.
Four Hatteras Island villages have joined the rest of Dare County's beach towns in scrapping a long-standing ban on the sale of liquor in restaurants.

In a vote of 248- 119 Tuesday, residents of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon - collectively known as Kinnakeet Township - sided with the business owners who have said the no-mixed-drinks rule put them at a competitive disadvantage after Hatteras Island's southern villages overturned the ban in December.

Both the result and the voter turnout are markedly different from the last time the question was posed to Kinnakeet Township residents. In 2007, a similar referendum was defeated 856- 662.

Permits could begin being issued to restaurants as soon as the election is certified, according to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

The vote means only a few establishments in unincorporated Dare County - such as in Wanchese and Colington - do not allow mixed drinks to be served.

liquor vote

Yep it is really something to be proud of. NOT.

Yankee Go Home

NJ and PA have completely taken over now. Just as in Ocracoke, the locals did not want this but the transplants and their Yankee greed are in control now. No more are we the quiet family destination where the sidewalks roll up at night. Welcome nightlife, chain restaurants and I hope Dare has budgeted for additional deputies, we'll need them. EMT's stand ready. I have worked in the island restaurants for 27 years and only twice have I ever had a party leave because they could not have a cocktail. The Yankees will not be satisfied until they have completely Jersey Shore-d the entire length. Why did they come if they wanted it to be 'the way we do it in (fill in crappy yankee town)'? Sad day.

Alcohol is alcohol

You can get just as tanked on Bud light as you can a scotch on the rocks.

Maybe the want to change it so it won't stay the way it is in (fill in crappy redneck town)

The Yankees are taking over

The Yankees are taking over the entire South not just the Outer Banks. They bring their "we are better than you " attitude with them. They will turn the comservative South into another liberal elitist section of the country.

Ignorance is Bliss…

I highly doubt it has anything to do with the “Greedy Yankees” allegedly taking over. NJ & PA have even stricter liquor control laws than here. All these laws are archaic to begin with. If alcohol is a legal substance then a business should have the freedom to choose whether to serve it or not. It has absolutely nothing to do with transplants; it’s about business’s wanting to profit. They seen the other towns lift the ban and want to get in on the cash also.

waah

1 - The civil war was over years ago

2 - Your opinion is not the only one...just because the rest of your neighbors don't agree with you doesn't mean that the 'yanks' took over, it means that the rest of your neighbors don't agree with you.

3 - Banning things that are legal isn't good business

4 - Some people like a coctail with their meal. Just because nobody in your vast experience has ever left because they couldn't get one doesn't mean that nobody has just not entered because they couldn't get one.

And finally...if you don't like it, I'm sure there's another backwards island you can go to that restricts personal liberties to your desired level. Perhaps Cuba?

I didnt realize that

I didnt realize that drinking alcohol and getting drunk and then killing somebody was a liberty but thanks for the civic lesson.

Bartender, I'll have a Bud

Bartender, I'll have a Bud Lite

ok

Looks like its time to head back down Rt 12

welcome to the 21st century

score one for the good guys
