Webb backs bill for offshore oil, gas exploration in Va.

RICHMOND

Sen. Jim Webb is calling on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee to consider legislation opening waters off Virginia to oil and gas exploration.

An aide said the Virginia Democrat's appeal has been heeded and will be offered as an amendment to a Senate bill on Thursday.

Webb and fellow Democrat Mark Warner have proposed legislation that would lift a moratorium the Obama administration placed on East Coast exploration following the Gulf oil spill. The Virginia senators also want to ensure leasing revenues flow to the state and an expansion of the leasing area. They say the change is needed to better reflect oil and gas reserves off the state's coast.

Webb maintains the proposal has strong support among state residents and Virginia's political leaders.

Unlikely to pass

The proposal being promoted by Sen. Webb is unlikely to pass, because it depends on:
1) Congressional representatives from the other 49 states relinquishing what would be federal revenue generated from drilling in federal waters to Virginia.
2) Neighboring Atlantic coast states relinquishing what had previously been established as their territory.
3) Overcoming opposition from the Navy to interfering with their training area.

to have tried and failed ......

At least someone is doing something in the party of "NO".

Obama can keep moratorium right up to Nov 2012

Webb should know the bill is D.O.A. Same energy policy for 40 years? Profits? Natural Gas? Jobs? We don't need no stinking jobs. I love watching Obama continue to step in it. He's sinking deep into the ideological quicksand as the economy continues to suffer. What's his green report card from the environmental activists show, A, B, C? We know he isn't going to get a failing grade - not for a Dem. He's more than welcome to continue writing his own political epitaph through next November.... Don't change a thing, Mr. President. You're doing a great job. Ha. Ha!

drill baby drill!

It's about time someone came to their senses and took a correct step forward instead of sideways. Jobs, revenue, less oil dependency on other corrupt nations while non-petroleum based energy is being developed slowly and smartly without restraints. I'm not a Webb fan, but I and many others back him 100% on this issue. Everyone else needs to unwrap themselves from their trees.

What in the wide world of sports

transpired over the last 14 days?

Senator Webb didn't become a yoyo, did he?

He doesn't have to worry about re-election

So he can do the right thing instead of the politically correct thing.

He doesn't have to worry about re-election

so he can do anything he wants, even stupid things like this.

Really?

"Webb maintains the proposal has strong support among state residents" on what basis?

If the public believes offshore drilling will result in a significant reduction in our dependence on foreign oil and low gas prices at the pump, their support is based on a lie.

Ah, but it is a start.

When you use adjectives like 'significant' and 'low' you can always claim you are right simply by changing the specific definition of those terms. The truth of the matter is every drop of oil produced from domestic source reduces foriegn dependence and factors into the price of gas.

When advocates of offshore

When advocates of offshore drilling make promises like "reducing our dependence on foreign oil" and "low gas prices at the pump," they are vastly overstating the potential benefits to the point of being dishonest.

The reality is that Virginia’s offshore oil supply would provide U.S. "energy independence" for about a week and would not affect the global price of oil at all.
