13-year-old boy who died in James City County crash identified

JAMES CITY COUNTY

A two vehicle crash left a 13-year-old boy dead and sent several others to area hospitals Monday night.

Shortly after 8 p.m. a Ford minivan traveling west on Va. 5 or John Tyler Highway appears to have lost control, ran off the road and rolled several times, striking a dump truck that was traveling east on the same road, Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County police said, citing a preliminary investigation. 

The 13-year-old boy in the minivan died. He was identified as Brashawante Brooks of Toano. There were six other occupants in the minivan, three adults and three other children. A 2-month-old girl remained hospitalized at MCV Hospital in Richmond. The 35-year-old male driver, an 18-year-old woman, 17-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl remained hospitalized at Riverside Regional Medical Center. A 31-year-old woman who was also in the minivan was treated and released.

The dump truck driver, a 50-year-old man from Williamsburg, was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, treated and released.

Police continued to investigate the cause of the crash. No charges have been filed.

The road was closed in both directions for about six hours while investigators worked at the scene.
