Residents can place their trash at the curb at any time. When setting out waste for curbside collection, please separate it into five distinct piles:
1. Household garbage in green cart. Overflow trash should be placed in dark plastic bags and tied off.
2. Building debris, furniture and related material.
3. Appliances
4. Yard debris in clear plastic bags. Individual branches must be less than 6 inches in diameter and no longer than 4 feet in length. Bundles must not exceed 18 inches in diameter.
5. Recycling materials placed in blue cart.

Tree debris should be placed curbside. Normal regulations regarding pile size, diameter and length are temporarily suspended. Do not mix plastic bags with woody debris.
Yard debris may be placed curbside in clear plastic bags but separate from woody debris piles. Residents are encouraged to delay placing bagged material for collection until after woody debris has been collected. There is a maximum limit of 25 pounds per bag.
Construction debris will not be collected by the city.
Furniture and appliances damaged by the storm will be collected curbside. A bulky-item request is required.
Household hazardous waste can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off facility at 1989 Jake Sears Road between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

HRT silent on bus cancellations due to Irene
Hampton Roads Transit has issued no information on their web site or available at Pilot Online about when they might cancel bus service due to Hurricane Irene. This lack of information may strand commuters who have gone to work and later will not be able to get home due to Hurricane conditions.

I don't understand . . .
Why some cities wait to the last minute to decide if they are going to close or shut down early! Clearly we are going to experience the effects of Irene. Make the decision early enough for everyone to get prepared (which u should be already) so that just hours before Irene gets here there would be less people scrambling to find shelter or supplies . . . IMHO
Cancellations
All kidding aside, wouldn't it be prudent to go ahead and cancel HRT buses and the LRT on Saturday? Or at least run them on a shortened schedule so there is time to properly secure them before Irene hits.
Good Luck All
I left the Tidewater area after 42 years and moved to the Charlotte area. I traded hurricanes for tornados.
Good Luck
One complete list
Would help to add ODU since they are closing...and I'm hearing the Seawall Art Fest in Portsmouth has been canceled. Everything on one list will help people not miss things. Thanks
Looters
I will load my SW 357 for looters.
