PORTSMOUTH
A 53-year-old man pleaded guilty today to the June 27 carjacking of an elderly woman at the Walmart on Frederick Boulevard.
Rodney Lee Scott approached the woman as she was getting into her Ford Edge, forced her out of the vehicle and threw her to the ground, a detective testified in court. The woman was treated for injuries to her head and arm.
The next day police spotted the stolen car, and Scott tried to elude police, driving at more than 90 mph and nearly hitting both a tractor trailer and a police vehicle, Detective John B. Humphries testified.
Humphries said that once at police headquarters, Scott was cooperative and confessed to the carjacking and an unrelated crime.
In addition to carjacking and attempting to elude police, Scott pleaded guilty today to grand larceny and obtaining money by false pretense for taking – and then pawning – a necklace belonging to the woman who rented him a room in Cradock.
He is to be sentenced Oct. 12.
