Oberndorf decides not to run for Virginia Senate

Posted to: Elections News Politics State Government Virginia

Incumbent state Sen. Frank Wagner, R-Virginia Beach, may have an easier path to re-election in November now that a leading contender to challenge him has decided not to run.

Former Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf said Monday evening she won't seek the Democratic nomination for the 7th Senate District seat, leaving the party without an identified candidate to run against Wagner.

The deadline for political parties to make nominations for the fall election is Aug. 23, meaning the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee has a narrow window to find a potential replacement.

Oberndorf, 70, recently addressed the committee about a possible candidacy but ultimately declined to wage a campaign. She said she will continue to be engaged in civic life, however, and did not rule out a future run for City Council.

"There's still time for someone to step forward and say they will run, but we don't have anybody on the horizon," committee treasurer Joel McDonald said Monday evening.

In the absence of a Senate candidate, he added, the local party will focus its efforts this year on the 21st House District race between Beach Republican Del. Ron Villanueva and attorney Adrianne Bennett, the Democratic nominee.

Republicans want to retake the Senate from Democrats, who now have a 22-18 majority.

Seems like some of you have

Seems like some of you have a lot of time on your hands. tons of ideas, some good, some bad.

Are you chicken?

Prefer to sit behind your alias?

And...I can't; I'm not scandal proof. ;)

low wage city stated that

low wage city stated that Virginia Beach has the lowest income of any Virginia city. When I googled for that information, there are four Virginia cities in the top 100 for lowest income, according to the IRS. Virginia Beach was not on the list. Where do you get your information, low wage?

Good Move, Meyera

Meyera Oberndorf is a good and decent person. She had a long reign as mayor, and served many years prior on VB City Council. Regarding her choice to not seek the Democratic nomination for state senate...she made the wise one. With all the growing problems our legislature faces, we need new blood and new ideas, not stale, career politicians who have no solutions. The same could be said for Sen. Frank Wagner, he's been there too long and nothing is getting done.

Expectations in 2012

I would expect her to re-run for Mayor in 2012 in a close race with current Mayor Will Sessoms.

However the 2012 elections are still a long way off...

Finally,

a Politician that makes a good choice. Will the voters ever get it through their heads? We don't need anymore career politicians.

Vote out the incumbent Republican too.....

Opinion?

"Incumbent state Sen. Frank Wagner, R-Virginia Beach, may have an easier path to re-election in November now that a leading contender to challenge him has decided not to run."

That is an opinion. News articles should be statements of fact, not the opinion of the reporter. In my opinion, Meyera wasn't going to be much of a challenge at all, coming off a devastating defeat and suspect fundraising potential at the state level.

Any reporter who shares that opinion should keep it out of his articles, too. Just report the news and leave opinions out.

since this rag, the pilot did not tag this as an opinion

piece, the credibility of this statement is accurate. News is suppose to be that, news. Unbiased, unslanted. When papers interdict their desires into news stories, they ruin the integrity of the news profession.

This is a story by the left leaning Pilot to send the word out that a -D candidate is needed to step up and run. This is yet another unpaid advertisement for the democratic party under the guise of news. If this was tagged opinion, I would not write this as everyone has an opinion and entitled to their opinion. That opinion should be allowed to be printed, and if the paper wishes to print more left leaning opinions, that is their prerogative.

This rag even put up Myra's pic even though not running, but no pic of Wagner.

Myera

Myera bumbled thru being the mayor of "surf city". What qualifies her to be a state legislator. Give me a break.
