The staff of the Virginia Department of Health has recommended approval for a new nursing home within a mile of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, which opens Thursday in the city's southern section.
A company affiliated with Roanoke-based Medical Facilities of America applied to the state health commissioner in March for permission to transfer beds from nursing homes in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach to form a 120-bed facility called the Princess Anne Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Medical Facilities of America is a partner in 32 nursing homes in Virginia, including four in South Hampton Roads. All the nursing homes and Medical Facilities share a common ownership.
Two of those facilities - Chesapeake Health & Rehabilitation Center and Virginia Beach Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center - would each lose 60 beds and shrink to 180 beds.
That plan would improve the distribution and accessibility of nursing home beds in the Chesapeake/Virginia Beach area, according to the staff report.
The proposed Princess Anne center offers "an exceptionally spacious design that would afford unusually ample facilities for provision of therapy services, for resident recreation and socialization, and for privacy for residents and visitors in resident bedrooms," the staff wrote. It would employ 120 full-time workers by its second year of operation.
Transferring beds out of the other facilities, which are more than three decades old, would allow improvements to rooms and more space for therapy and leisure activities, the report said.
A final decision by the state health commissioner is expected by early September. If the $13.4 million project is approved, it could be completed by September 2014.

Putting a nursing home near
Putting a nursing home near a hospital, although common, makes no sense. Are the residents and family members supposed to feel better to be close to a hospital? How does being close to a hospital help anything? Because it's only a short trip there in case of an emergency? Yeah. Where is the ambulance coming from? It would make more sense to build a nursing home near an ambulance station. Sick people get better care in an ambulance than they do waiting for one to come.
wait for it...
It'll only be a matter of time before there is a conflict between the amphitheater and nursing home. I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up with the new hospital. Concerts already can't go past a certain time because of the surrounding neighborhoods. We'll see how long it takes for the hospital and future nursing home to chime in.
There are these things
There are these things called "pathogens" that cause "disease." These "diseases" have been responsible for killing millions if not billions of people over time how to weigt loose. Luckily, "medical science" has developed these things called "vaccines" to provide protection for persons of "pathogens" causing "the disease".
this is a good idea
This is a good idea to round out the development along Princess Anne Road
