A Toano man faces charges of faking a raffle that was supposed to raise money to solve the Colonial Parkway slayings.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office said this morning that Fred Atwell, 62, was charged with one count of larceny by false pretenses.
York-Poquoson Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Ivey says Atwell held a car raffle to raise money for a fund started by the parkway victims' families. The families gave Atwell money for fees associated with the raffle. An investigation found that the cars didn't exist.
The fund supports investigations of the slayings of six people and the disappearances of two others along the parkway in the 1980s.
Atwell told media outlets that he should have stopped the raffle when he couldn't get cars for it.
The investigation is continuing.
