Shipwrecked man makes bail in Norfolk

Posted to: Crime Hurricanes - Storms News Norfolk Weather

NORFOLK

The sailor shipwrecked by the hurricane has been released from jail.

Michael Calabrese, 48, made bail Wednesday afternoon, said Paula Miller, spokeswoman for the Norfolk Sheriff's Department.

Calabrese and his girlfriend were rescued from the 42-foot yacht Maybe Tomorrow in Ocean View on Saturday during Hurricane Irene. The next day, he was arrested for trespassing at the Bayview Recreation Center, according to a police report.

Calabrese said in an interview that he was unable to come up with $50 to make bail.

The boat is stranded on the beach near 9th View Street at Willoughby. The city has given Calabrese until Monday to remove the vessel or city workers will chop it up and haul it away.

facts are facts and they are not pretty

He has years of "poor, as well as illegal" decision making that are documented in his records----criminal record, court took his child away, has no insurance on the boat yet it is all he has, but he did not value it enough to insure it or even evacuate to avoid the storm--at some point we can hope he will be held accountable for his poor choices and get help for his alcohol problem.

even more to the story I wanna know

Arrested for trespassing at the Bayview Rec center?! Doesn't even have $50? Now come on folks, this story is getting more and more intriquing each day without anyone else getting hurt. First the what theck were you thinking plot, and now what's up with the trespassing gig? The other is just who is or what is this character? I'm really interested in knowing the whole story. Could someone please from the Pilot pursue this and get the rest of the story please.
The boat? Since the city is pushing the issue he must not have proof of insurance. But on the other hand, it's become a tourist attraction perhaps bringing some people to have lunch or dinner in the area. Unless it's leaking, fuel, let's not be in too big of a hurry. But nuther storm?

Do your homework

Pilot has reported the answers to what you want to know. You need to keep up w/ daily stories in order to get the whole picture.

Citation, please?

Oh, do tell. Then the least this reporter could've done would have been to say, "Continuing the story from Monday's Pilot..." or whatever. You know, it's not that far-fetched or DEMANDING for a professional to put links to the other little stories they've done, is it? I keep up with the Pilot daily, and this is the first I've seen on this story. I'm afraid you have it backwards, friend. It's the newspaper's job to provide this level of information (that this is a follow-up story, and where to go to the other stories), NOT the other way around.

The Pilot does include

The Pilot does include related stories with articles. Pay attention. They do it often and this story is no exception.

You obviously don't keep up

You obviously don't keep up with Pilot. Links to related & past stories are always on the left side of the screen & I've been reading news about this story for days now. So what are you looking at?

Uhh, no.

PilotOnline is my home page, and I'm also a journalist and news junkie, so please don't presume to tell us all that there weren't a lot of holes here where additional information would have been useful. The whole point is: Facilitate information agility for your readers instead of information potholes. I'm looking at the page right now, and I'm seeing no traces of the rest of the story. Please tell me where on this page suggests previous reporting. Oh, that's right, you can't. Thanks. Next.

I mean, it only says RELATED

I mean, it only says RELATED in red letters under his mugshot & has been there all day. You do know what related means, right?

Right under his mugshot is a

Right under his mugshot is a list of prior & related stories. Put your glasses on grandpa.

No improvement

O.k., let's take a look:

LINK ONE: A story on "street sweeping in Newport News" that really gets me interested in reading further.
- Then, a story about an Oak tree, an old one, kind of interesting, and sad, but no.
- Water in Dare Co. is safe. I've heard of Dare Co., but I don't even know where it is. Population 25?
- Red flags at beaches in North Carolina. Yeah, really relevant to my interests.
- Boater rescued during Irene... WAIT A MINUTE, THERE IT IS! Buried in a bunch of "related" and equally compelling stories, it really jumps right out at you. How silly of me not to equate random "boater" with "shipwrecked man."
- Then two more stories...
You guys are regular Joseph Pulitzers aren't you!! I'm dazzled by your brilliance!
