Red carnations and fluttering American flags lined the beach, forming a gateway to the surf Tuesday night. Sunflowers, daisies and red roses filled buckets, as more than 200 surfers picked up a flower, clenched it in their teeth and paddled out into the ocean off Sandbridge near one of Kraig Vickers' favorite surfing spots.
Vickers, a Navy bomb disposal technician working with a Beach-based SEAL team, was one of 30 Americans killed in the helicopter crash in Afghanistan. He lived in Virginia Beach with his wife and children. Another child is on the way.
Just south of the Little Island Fishing Pier, surfers and stand-up paddlers formed a giant circle, interlocking hands and paddles in a ceremony called a paddle-out.
The event was a rare public display of mourning for victims of the crash in a city home to secretive, close-knit SEAL teams and those who work with them. Organizers asked that no interviews be conducted. Vickers’ wife, Nani, was at the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Tuesday, where the remains were brought home.
Vickers originally was from Hawaii and would have turned 37 on Thursday. Friends and family members told Hawaiian newspapers that he was a standout high school football player in Maui, devoted to his family and as smart as he was strong. A picture of him displayed Tuesday showed him sitting on the beach, cradling one of his daughters in his massive forearms.
He enjoyed stand-up paddling and last year he entered a Sandbridge race with a daughter, who wore a water wing, riding with him on the board.
Just before Tuesday’s paddle-out circle broke up, whoops, screams and splashing erupted from the crowd and hundreds of flowers were cast into the ocean.
Out at sea, a storm hovered. The sun setting over the beach was a disc blurred orange by smoke from a swamp fire. A pod of dolphins surfaced and pelicans in a low, tight formation skimmed the water.
The surfers paddled back to the beach, riding the waves in.

Everyone pays respects in
Everyone pays respects in different ways. I personally dont know a thing about the surfing lifestyle, but seeing how these people got together to honor a fallen friend and true warrior in the way that they did was really inspirational. Bravo Zulu to those involved.
What in the world is with
What in the world is with all the thumb-downs?????? Out of 11 comments I saw one that deserved it.
Thank You
A chilling, stirring tribute to this lost hero. God bless his family and all of the families of these fallen warriors.
Paddle Out
I was glad to be a part of the paddle out. Coming from a Navy family this really hits close to home. May God bless Kraig's family and friends. The number of people who participated clearly indicates what kind of man our country and community has lost. Aloha brother and rest in peace.
Surfers tribute
Seriously, how could anyone "dislike" any of these comments. This is about a great, proud American, lost protecting his country and his friends showing their respect and support for the family he left behind. For shame!

How can anyone dislike any of the comments? One (half) word. Lib....
Let me finish your thought
"..erals." It might surprise you to learn that not all liberals are flag-burning, country-hating, Godless Marxists. We proudly fly our nation's flag and stand for the National Anthem. Some of us are career military officers. We go to church. Our children join the Scouts and play Little League. We watch NASCAR and listen to country music. We drive pickup trucks and eat pork rinds. We love our country as much as you do. We just happen to think that government is by and for ALL people not just the select few, that we're all in this together and have a duty to take care of each other because that's what Americans do. And yes, we even mourn the loss of our heroes.
I assume the point is that
I assume the point is that Republicans are supposed to fit the stereotype of exhibiting some of these attributes? Nascar and pick ups? Really?
No...
I think the point made was pretty clear.
And well said.
Chill, my friend.
I don't think liberal is a
I don't think liberal is a word that should be used when describing the democratic parties members. It describes a mind set, not the entire party. I know many democrats who are not liberal. Same with being conservatives.
