VIRGINIA BEACH

A truck struck and injured a bicyclist riding on Shore Drive this morning.

The cyclist was heading east between the mid gate of Fort Story and 83rd Street about 7:45 a.m., said Officer Jimmy Barnes, a police spokesman.

That’s when the truck came up from behind and struck him with either the front end of his vehicle or his passenger side rear-view mirror, knocking him off his bike, he said.

The cyclist suffered road rash to his back, elbow and knee, but was conscious and able to walk, Barnes said. An ambulance took him to a hospital for evaluation.

Police charged the driver with reckless driving, Barnes said.

This is the fourth time since May that a cyclist has been struck and injured on Shore Drive. In one other incident, the cyclist suffered minor injuries. But in two of the crashes, the cyclists were seriously injured and the drivers fled.
