Two people were killed in a crash late Monday night in Pungoteague on the Eastern Shore.

Cecilio Purneda Alaniz, Shirley Mae Tate and two other people were on Va. 178 near Va. 169 shortly after 10 p.m. when the Buick Century they were riding in went off the road, hit a tree stump and overturned, according to a Virginia State Police news release.

Alaniz, 53, and Tate, 72, died at the scene. They lived in Craddockville. Two passengers in the back of the car were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

All four people in the car were wearing seatbelts, state police said. Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash, the police also said.
