Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Long Creek victory

Perhaps reporters were asleep when the Virginia Beach Board of Zoning Appeals voted 4 to 2 to repeal the decision to build a dredge spoils transfer facility at the Maple Street site on Long Creek. A full house witnessed this decision. There were 10 pages of sign-ins at the front desk, yet there was no coverage by the paper. It is rare when a city's legal determination of a zoning decision is repealed. The city is determined to put an industrial transfer site into this residential area, however, and will now take it to Circuit Court.

Putting it in that location will not be safe for residents, boaters or others who enjoy this pristine area, and it will destroy wildlife and wetlands. It's time for the city government to respect and protect its citizens. Take the muck out where the need is and keep it out of Long Creek.

Big Ruling and no VP Article?

Makes one wonder. An almost unprecedented ruling with a near-record attendance and not even a whimper in the newspaper? Surely a follow up on the previous articles was in order.....

Nationally, the overturning of a zoning administrator's decision is nearly unheard of. The City goes into the hearing as being "right first." The citizen enters at a disadvantage.

The results show the importance of a government based on law.

Wow.....
