Navy ship Oak Hill departs Monday for Caribbean

The crew of the amphibious transport dock ship Oak Hill and 400 additional sailors and Marines are to leave Norfolk on Monday for a stint in the southern Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

The Little Creek-based ship and its embarked units, including Marine helicopter squadrons and Navy riverine and assault craft units, will take part in a mission called Amphibious-Southern Partnership Station, which works to develop partnerships that enhance regional stability and security. Exchanges with the Colombian and Guatemalan militaries are planned. The ship will also help distribute donated humanitarian and educational materials as part of Project Handclasp.

According to a news release from the Navy, the mission will be commanded by Capt. Arturo Garcia, deputy commander of Amphibious Squadron 8. Cmdr. David Bauer is skipper of the Oak Hill.
