Norfolk International Terminals boosts security

Posted to: Business Ports and Rail

Watch your step if you're anywhere near the fence of Norfolk International Terminals.

The port has piggy-backed a new fiber-optic sensor system onto the array of wireless cameras that monitor the cargo terminal's nearly 5-mile-long perimeter.

"It provides an extra layer of security," said Joe Harris, a port spokesman, who called it a cost-effective way to enhance surveillance.

Developed by Optellios Inc., based in Newtown, Pa., the intrusion-sensor system can detect any attempt to get onto the terminal property through or over the fence, said George Zisk, vice president/operations for Optellios.

"We added some smart technology that activates an alarm and allows the cameras to turn and point in the direction of any intruder," he said. "We are installing this technology at many of the nation's critical infrastructures."

Funding for the new system came from a port security grant as part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security project.
