Previews and picks for Friday's games

Jami and Larry take a look at Friday's contests, which begin at 7 p.m. at the home school unless otherwise noted:

 

First Colonial (0-0) at No. 2 Salem (1-0)

The scoop First Colonial is getting a late start after a Week 1 postponement and then last week's bye. Coach Sam Scarborough returns to the Patriots' sideline after coaching them previously to 34 victories over seven seasons. Salem comes off a convincing 31-6 thumping of Bayside in a Beach District showdown last week. RB Divante Walker rushed for 175 yards and the SunDevils collected five sacks. Larry Salem, 38-20. Jami Salem, 24-10.

 

Cox (0-1) at No. 4 Ocean Lakes (1-0)

Site Virginia Beach Sportsplex

The scoop Cox, after a loss to Green Run, hopes to avoid an 0-2 hole in the Beach District. The Falcons rallied from a 16-0 deficit last week before falling 22-16. Ocean Lakes opened with a 40-7 victory over Princess Anne. First-year starting QB Corwin Cutler threw for 152 yards and two TDs. Larry Ocean Lakes, 27-17. Jami Cox, 21-17.

 

Tallwood (1-0) at No. 8 Landstown (1-0)

The scoop Tallwood started the John Kepple coaching era with a thrilling three-overtime victory against Kempsville. RB Rafael Moore rushed for 103 yards, and the Lions stopped a two-point conversion to win it. Landstown started slow before pulling away from Kellam last week. New QB Keanu Reuben accounted for 231 yards and three scores. Larry Landstown, 33-16. Jami Landstown, 21-7.

 

Lakeland (1-0, 0-0) at Hickory (1-0, 0-0)

The scoop Lakeland was among the surprise teams last week, thumping Deep Creek 41-0 on the strength of QB Zach Super's 304 passing yards. It was Super's first start after sitting out a season. Hickory opened with a 31-28 OT victory over Norview in coach Jupiter Wilson's debut. QB Bear Totten threw for 142 yards and a TD, and John Shaw kicked a game-winning 23-yard field goal. Hickory won this Southeastern District match-up 35-6 last season, though the teams have split their past four meetings. Larry Hickory, 27-23. Jami Lakeland, 28-21.

 

Princess Anne (0-1) at Kempsville (0-1)

The scoop Princess Anne's on-field losing streak hit 31 consecutive games with last week's 40-7 loss to Ocean Lakes. The Cavaliers committed three costly turnovers - two were returned for TDs, another led to a field goal. Kempsville gained 274 rushing yards in a three-OT loss to Tallwood, and RB Chris Guy gained 109 on the ground. The Chiefs won this Beach match-up 63-32 last season. Larry Princess Anne, 34-13. Jami Kempsville, 32-28.

 

Nansemond River (1-0, 0-0) at No. 7 Grassfield (1-0, 0-0)

The scoop RB Lamont Brown's 122 rushing yards helped Nansemond River beat Wilson 22-9 and snap an eight-game losing streak that dated to last season. The Warriors held Wilson to minus-18 rushing yards. Grassfield topped Maury last week and has outscored Nansemond River 105-12 in three consecutive victories. Larry Grassfield, 28-23. Jami Grassfield, 24-8.

 

Deep Creek (0-1, 0-1) at Western Branch (0-1, 0-0)

The scoop These Southeastern District rivals hook up after opening losses. The Hornets lost 41-0 to Lakeland, while Western Branch opened with a 21-14 loss to Norcom. Keeping possession figures to be key: both teams committed three turnovers last week. Larry Western Branch, 31-14. Jami Western Branch, 20-3.

 

King's Fork (0-1, 0-0) at Indian River (0-1, 0-0)

The scoop These teams open Southeastern District play after non-district losses last week. Indian River won last season by a point and has beaten King's Fork in 6 of 7 meetings since the Suffolk school opened. Larry King's Fork, 21-17 Jami King's Fork, 28-24.

 

Bethel (1-0) at Lake Taylor (1-0)

The scoop Bethel trounced Gloucester 35-0 in its opener last week, while Lake Taylor won easily over Indian River. They took different paths: The Titans' duo of Torrey Palmer and Brandon Moore combined for 295 rushing yards and three TDs; Bethel QB Frank Brown threw for more than 200 yards. Larry Lake Taylor, 26-20. Jami Lake Taylor, 19-14.

 

Menchville (0-0) at Wilson (0-2)

The scoop Wilson lost two games in five days last week - to Norcom and Nansemond River. Menchville had a bye last week. This non-district game should be close. The past four meetings have been decided by 10 points or less, with Wilson winning 21-19 and 28-27 the past two seasons. Larry Menchville, 13-12. Jami Menchville, 28-22.

 

Churchland (0-1) at Phoebus (1-0)

The scoop While Churchland opened with a 25-7 loss to Kecoughtan, Phoebus - the three-time defending Group AAA Division 5 state champion - squeaked past Heritage 13-7. Phoebus won this match-up 45-0 last season. Larry Phoebus 36-13. Jami Phoebus, 33-7.

 

Granby (0-1) at Gloucester (0-1)

The scoop Granby opened with a 34-6 loss to Great Bridge, while Gloucester is coming off a bye. The Dukes beat Granby 24-13 last season. Larry Gloucester, 14-12. Jami Gloucester, 19-17.

 

Maury (0-1) vs. Woodside (0-0)

Site Todd Stadium, Newport News

The scoop Maury played its first game under new coach Chris Fraser, losing 23-12 to Grassfield. Woodside, coming off a bye week, has won four consecutive games in the series, including 35-0 last season. Larry Woodside, 20-13. Jami Woodside, 36-12.
