State to help Va. Beach buy tract of undeveloped land

Posted to: Environment Local Government News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

The state is helping the city buy the last large tract of undeveloped property on the Lynnhaven River.

The Virginia Land Conservation Foundation will kick in $500,000 toward the purchase of Pleasure House Point, off Shore Drive, city officials announced on Thursday.

The city and The Trust for Public Land are buying the property, primarily for open space and conservation, for $13 million from Wells Fargo Bank. Developer L.M. Sandler and Sons Inc. had plans to build more than 1,000 homes on the property before the real estate crisis crippled the company.

The city has contributed $5 million to the purchase, and officials also are pursuing a low-interest loan from the state to make up the rest of the cost.

It's a good thing

It's a good thing VB bought this land. I heard the VB YMCA was looking to expand! Can you say free?

Early reports show they plan

Early reports show they plan to develop and improve the land that is being "conserved." Check it out.

It't a good site

For the dredge spoils the city wants to do

Caveat emptor!

Careful about celebrating. King Will and VBCC,in tow, will find a way to develop the wetlands/land area.
I hope it remains just the way it is! Natural wetland!

Thank God

I'm so happy to see this being preserved.

Any questions ?

You can check out the link below ... at www.SavePHP.org. This is a Grant. This is for open space, education, research, for your grand kids, etc. This is forever. There doesn't need to be construction of concrete and pavement on every square inch of land, nor does every tree need cut down, and every wetland filled in. The highest best use of PHP is preservation for all future generations.

Not in Favor

I think the private sector can do something better with this nice property.

as the song goes

Pave paradise to put up a parking lot.

One More thing!

I don't want to hear Towne bank is on the hook for this and the City is bailing them out, Who owned the land before WF obtained it and at what price. How much land is it?
