Submarine Newport News due back from deployment

Posted to: Military Norfolk

NORFOLK

The submarine Newport News is scheduled to return to Norfolk on Thursday.

The fast-attack submarine, which has a crew of about 140, left on Feb. 21 and covered more than 40,000 nautical miles while deployed, almost equivalent to circling the globe twice. It visited a number of European ports including Toulon, France; Lisbon, Portugal; and Faslane, Scotland. It also stopped in England and Norway.

The Navy did not provide specifics of the submarine's mission, but noted that fast-attack submarines are generally used for supporting special forces operations and disrupting adversaries' military and economic operations.

Newport News is commanded by Cmdr. J. Carl Hartsfield.
