The U.S. Department of Education designated three local schools – one public, two Catholic – 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on student achievement or gains on standardized tests, the Virginia Department of Education announced today.
Named were Kemps Landing Magnet School, a public middle school for gifted students, and Saint Matthew and Star of the Sea Catholic schools.
They’re among 11 public and private schools in Virginia so honored, and 304 nationwide. A November awards ceremony is scheduled in Washington.

The Renaissance Academy used
The Renaissance Academy used to have the old Kemps Landing which was in the worst condition in the school system. The building that used to house the students in Renaissance Academy was in bad shape, BUT it could have been replaced much less expensively. The building cost $66 million. To put it into perspective, a new Elementary School would cost about $18 million. The Renaissance Academy was built for the pregnant and 'behaviorally troubled' teens.
KLMS students are from all
KLMS students are from all over Virginia Beach. Gifted students do have learning disabilities.
The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act was designed to remedy the fact that some students are not learning what they need for the grade they're in. While I agree with the goals of NCLB, it does not take gifted students into account. I think that the needs of gifted children should get the same consideration as the disadvantaged or low-achieving students.
KLMS
Kemps Landing Magnet School is a public middle school for gifted and talented middle school students and they can live anywhere in the city of Virginia Beach. They must complete an application process and be accepted into the school.
Doesn't mean a thing
All these different organizations make up "lists" and give out "awards" that mean nothing. A number of schools in Norfolk were one time "Blue Ribbon" schools and now they are on the verge of not meeting NCLB standards. I'll bet the people who make up these awards don't even visit the schools much less have a clue about them, besides the flashy paperwork that's submitted, by the school. And oh, wasn't Kemps Landing over run by rats during the time this award was being processed?
According to Jim Morris, the
According to Jim Morris, the assistant director of environmental management, traced the rat problem to when crews rewired the 54-year-old building while installing interactive whiteboards throughout the school. The workers left several gaping holes in the walls giving rodents an easy entryway.
How does that effect the school academic exellence? It says alot that the students could still excel despite the rat problem!
congratulations
to the teachers and administration of these schools. Great Job!
and
of course congratulations to the students also!
No Norfolk Academy???
You mean I paid all that money for my kids to attend NA and they didn't even make the list? What you talkin bout Willis? I could have just sent them to some second rate school like Greenbriar Christian or Catholic High!!!!!
What are the demographics of Kempslanding Middle School?
What are the demographics of Kempslanding Middle School? What percentage of their students have learning disabilities?
Congratulations Kemps
Congratulations Kemps Landing Magnet School. I can't help but wonder if a certain absentee school board member somehow got wind this award was coming and it influenced her decision to rescind her resignation. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November and she plans to return to Virginia Beach for two weeks in November. Coincidence, or is she hoping to be front and center to receive the award? I mean the school is located in the district she represented. Sandra?
