Virginia's unemployment rate rose in August amid job cuts in government, professional and business services and the information sector, the Virginia Employment Commission reported.
The size of Virginia's labor force - the number of individuals employed plus the number out of work - normally falls in August, but that wasn't the case last month, the commission said.
The number of unemployed jumped by 9,535, or 3.7 percent, for the largest monthly increase in more than two years, the agency said.
Virginia's jobless rate, unadjusted for seasonality, climbed to 6.5 percent from 6.2 percent in July, it said. When adjusted for seasonal factors, the August rate rose to 6.3 percent from 6.1 percent.
The number of payroll jobs declined by 9,500 between July and August, but there were 4,300 more jobs than in August 2010. The sectors hit by major job losses between July and August included government, where employment fell by 5,700, and information, which was down by 4,500. Information-sector employment was affected by a strike last month by Verizon workers.
The professional-and-business services sector, a major source of job growth during the past year, lost 3,100 jobs between July and August.
The number of initial jobless claims increased by almost 7 percent last month to 34,140, the commission said. However, the latest monthly total remained well below the 51,949 claims filed in August 2010.
The agency said it plans to report the jobless rates for Virginia localities Sept. 28.

I don't care what the National average is
We in Virginia have always been blessed by the approximation of the BIG job creator the Federal government and we still have an increasing unemployment rate of 6.3 plus. It is time to analyze the situation; Hampton Roads has not done well under this Governor or the last few for that matter. The politician’s please the big money folks of Northern Virginia and the guaranteed vote of the southwest part of the state. However, we in Hampton Roads have been ignored, for example, when was the last announcement that a new company or expansion was coming to HR? We need someone from HR looking out for us and our children.
bob mcdonnell
is from HR.
He was supposed to be the "jobs governor".
sometimes
Just sometimes, the DEMOPILOTS DEMORAT colors come shining through. Virginia is still way below the national average. So I'd say that Gov. Bob is doing way better than BHO.
Remember
Virginia was well below the national level under Gov. Kaine.
Just sometimes, the MILITARY
Just sometimes, the MILITARY and FEDERAL CIVIL SERVICE employees taken into account have a positive effect on Virginia's unemployment rates which have nothing to do with efforts by either the Governor or the President. On the other hand, some posters show their partisan colors at every opportunity.
Hey Bob
where are the jobs? Oh yeah, your friend Rick Perry took themall to Texas. Thanks Bob, we didn't know you were loyal to Texas
Kinda Like Those 2500+ JFCOM Jobs That the Administration
Created..... OOPS Cut. No big impact, those jobs only were paying double the average salary in Hampton Roads. Its not like that is the equivalent of 5000 jobs. Not the kinda Hope and Change Hampton Roads thought they were getting.
This is rich!
I wondered why they posted the story twice. The second one, this one, the removed all the references to the fact that, even though numbers are up this MONTH, they are down significantly from last year. They also took out the mention of the national rate being hire. Wonder why they did those thing?
Higher
not hire. Jeesh sometimes I wonder. Also, 'they removed' not 'the removed'.
