Deidra Rader won a year's supply of free doughnuts Tuesday and promised to share - if her girls volleyball players snapped a six-game losing streak.
Rader, the first-year coach at Nansemond River, camped out for three days to be the first customer at a new Krispy Kreme shop in Virginia Beach. A few hours later, the Warriors topped Indian River in four sets for their first victory of the season.
"It was an inspiration, and I'm glad it helped," Rader said. "I just hate that it was doughnuts that served as the inspiration."
Rader also earned a free iPad, and some online scorn. A story on The Pilot's website drew dozens of comments by late Wednesday afternoon, most taking Rader to task for missing work - and a few Nansemond River practices. Rader, though, wasn't worried about the critics.
"I'm probably in better shape than most of them," said Rader, who played volleyball at Oral Roberts University. "I do like Krispy Kreme, but I probably haven't had one in three years."
Rader plans to make good on her promise of doughnuts today. One problem: Her punch card earns her a free dozen glazed. She has 13 varsity players.
