The three parts of the SAT are graded out of 800 points, for a total possible score of 2400. Scores on the SAT fell or flatlined at most Hampton Roads schools last year, but educators say it’s a good thing. A larger pool means a more diverse pool.

Private schools have the option to be selective in who they accept into the school. Public schools do not. Private schools don't have the burden of fighting school boards and high level admins. for legit solutions to student learning. Private schools are a business. They may have to draw on kids that may not necessarily meet whatever standards they set, so that they can keep operating. Publics schools that I've worked for (in FL,NC,DC, and VA) do a great job of tracking students(illegal but routinely done) to keep the future convicts from the future leaders of our society. A better way to compare(if possible)would be to pull the numbers from what many public schools call an Honors program and compare them to the private school numbers
private schools
You can go to www.privateschoolreview.com and look for private schools near you to compare but be aware that MOST have what is called a AVERAGE COMPOSITE score not the TOTAL AVERAGE listed in the paper. A composite includes ONLY the reading and math WITHOUT the writing. So a score of 1240 for instance is very good since it is 1240 out of 1600 and not (as in portsmouth) almost half the possible points. A few schools claim on their websites a total average of 1600 to 1700 which is well above the usual in Hampton Roads for a public school.
Inconclusive Story
I wish they would have compared the region's Private Schools as well with these stats. Im curoius what those schools got.
Pilot probably wouldn't report it
Because the best private schools would make public education look bad.
PRIVATE SCHOOL SCORE
You should have said, the worst Private School score would probably be better than the best Public School score.
It's Who You Know
1700 might get you a sniff at a Harvard or Yale but truth be told, you'll never get an true explanation as to why you didn't get in and the kid with a 1200 did. It's not black or white or red or yellow. It's GREEN.
Not what you think.....you would be surprised
The private country club schools do not show their results because they are not bettter. They are ashamed to show how low they are after milking all the rich suckers like cows. Their staffs are much less qualified than those in the public schools, just compare the credentials. There will always be a bunch of spoiled snobs who think money can buy everything and that their children are getting a special education. What a farse. If I am incorrect, then prove me wrong, just one problem, I know the real numbers and they cannot touch Princess Anne! Ha! Ha.! Suckers!
the
scores are higher, but its the discipline,no saggy pants either. In our private school (NOT rich parents most are middle class and struggle/dont go on vacations/new cars etc so their kids will have the best future)its discipline. Hours of homework (the kid next door has almost none at his high school) teach self discipline and work management that payoff in college. Our school also pays teachers well so we have ALOT of male teachers who are positive role models for the young men. If Norfolk really cares they will produce vouchers for ALL PARENTS so everyone has opportunity for their child (that of course will never happen) and CHARTER SCHOOLS with a LOTTERY that will allow any child and parent the opportunity.
Comparison of High Schools
While your comment may be true for many of the private schools in this area, I can tell you that the top privates in the area are far above the rest. That being said, that does not mean that there are not plenty of extremely bright individuals at the public schools but if you look at the grouping, the bottom dwellers from these private schools end up at the schools that the middle dwellers of public schools go to. I went to a private school in the area where it was RARE to find a teacher who did not have a graduate degree and it is hard to imagine finding a school whose teachers were more passionate about their job and desire to teach. I don't feel like my family was 'milked' of our tuition money, either.
Public schools must release their scores
and private schools do not. However, I am sure that private schools would be willing, if only to show how much better they are.
