City extends 'Occupy Norfolk' permit for two weeks

NORFOLK

Occupy Norfolk will keep its downtown camp and hold marches for at least two more weeks.

The city extended a permit so the group can continue to camp at Commercial Place and hold parades at specific times, according to a memo from City Manager Marcus Jones to the City Council, which was given to news media.

Members of the movement set up camp earlier this month. The renewal allows as many as 30 people to sleep in 20 tents in the park. Police and the city attorney's office are monitoring the group, Jones' memo said.

Occupy Norfolk and similar groups across the country are modeled after the Occupy Wall Street protests that started outside the New York Stock Exchange in September.

MORE THEN ONE-THIRD OF COUNTRY SUPPORT OCCUPY PROTESTS

On an absolute basis things my not seem as bad in country's such as Egypt. Relatively things are as bad. We are moving backwards, if we don't make a stand for what's right, who will? This is what the occupy movement is about.

We the O.M. are not about blaming one person. It is not about getting rid of a particular president. It is about changing a system that has become corrupted and is rigged in favor of the rich. who turn there heads at the sight of young and old alike protesting, marching, handing out information taking day and night 24\7 to spread the truth about all the lies and major injustice the big banks and small a like are doing everyday by keeping the poor down while filling there pockets with greed money gained by lies.

Full circle

I understand the point of some of the protest. Some I think is valid other points not so much so.

What I do find interesting is the internal argument they have over their own money. Seems they have about 500k of which 416 k is banked. They have a finance committee ( 1 % ? ) that decides where the money goes. I love this comment

""The other day, I took in $2,000. I kept $650 for my group, and gave the rest to Finance," he told the Post. "Then I went to them with a request -- so many people need things, and they should not be going without basic comfort items -- and I was told to fill out paperwork. Paperwork! Are they the government now?" "

So they earned 2k, the 1% ( finance ) took the rest ( taxes ) and the 99% are angry.

Irony.

to prove a point

I hope that all the Occupy Wall Street protest groups would have a wonderful day with warm nights and cool days.

I really wish that the Occupy Wall Street protest groups be able to hear opposing points of view and reach a rational conclusion based on facts.

Does anyone know what this

Does anyone know what this protest is really about. It seems like they are unhappy with their lot in life and jealous of those who have done well. What does protest wall street mean? Who exactly are they protesting? What specifically are they protesting. What do they hope to accomplish? It seems like something fun for young college age kids to do to buck the system.

WE WANT THE LAND OF THE FREE TO WAKE UP

An entire generation across the globe has grown up realizing, rationally and emotionally, that we have no future in the current order of things. Living under structural adjustment policies and the supposed expertise of international organizations like the World Bank and IMF, we watched as our resources, industries and public services were sold off and dismantled as the “free market” pushed an addiction to foreign goods, to foreign food even. And these so called college kids are the ones who owe tens of thousands of dollars in student loans and can't even find a job in this so called land of the free. More like the land of bigotry.

Knowing the enemy

and the power structure confirms the importance of this effort.

What it's about

It's about the corruption of government by big business interests. It's about getting the money influence out and the citizen influence back. It's about putting public interest ahead of special interests. It's about regaining government of the People by People for the People instead of the corporate oligarchy its become.

It's not about "jealousy," "handouts," or "shortcuts" but it is about a future that includes opportunity for all of us.

How to empty the park

Toss a bar of soap in the middle of them.
They'll scatter like roaches.

it's too bad...

but your two cents isn't worth 2 cents any more.
Still having some 60's and 70's hippie protest backlash are we???
