Dare County tells Rodanthe visitors to wait longer

Posted to: Hurricanes - Storms Irene News North Carolina

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C.

The hurricane-ravaged northern villages on Hatteras Island will remain off-limits to visitors for at least one more week, Dare County announced in a news release Tuesday.

Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo - closed to tourists since the storm - will remain closed until sometime after Monday. Dare County had previously said the villages would reopen sometime after Thursday.

The villages took the brunt of the Aug. 27 storm. In its final hours, Hurricane Irene pushed Pamlico Sound over its eastern banks and into the villages. Many homes and businesses were devastated by the soundside flooding.
