In the everyday battle of mail carrier vs. dog, one dog temporarily came out ahead — and 10 Norfolk apartments now have no mail.
WAVY-TV reports a 6-year-old pitbull mix recently bit a mail carrier, so the Postal Service has stopped delivering to the apartments along a Norfolk Avenue cul-de-sac. For now, residents will have to go to the post office to pick up their mail.
Norfolk Animal Control was contacted after the postal carrier was bitten, and the dog, Bubba, has been quarantined for 10 days. The dog's owner has been cited for failing to keep the dog current on its shots.

Don't they carry spray?
Why wouldn’t a mailman carry dog repellant or did PETA mung that up someway? Note – pepper spray and MACE are not that effective against dogs. You need the real thing. I know PETA forced people in Alaska to stop carrying bear repellant for a while because the effect on the bears had not been studied properly. They started carrying .44 magnums. Their effect was pretty well understood so that didn’t seem to be a problem.
mail not being delivered
The Postal Service has the right to protect thier employees from harmfull situations. The residents of this street are incnvenienced by one person's behaviour. You know that your animals need to have rabies shots and up to date tags. Maybe the owner should be made to pay for any and all medical expenses related to this dog bite. Also they should be heavily fined for each and every day that this person is in non- compliance of the law. Let the person responsible for this incovenienced be inconvenienced by having them pay for a private courier to deliver their mail.

Mail carriers should carry a hand gun
Animal bites mail carrier...mail carrier shoots animal. Take carcass in for examination for disease at the owners expense. If this is done a few times owners will keep control of their animals.

...why can't they deliver the mail? At least for the quarantine period?

"So I agree with the first commenter, but the second?"..... You weren't asked to agree with me. I state that the current owner isn't able to properly train the dog. What option is left? They obviously don't control the dog. It did bit someone. They're track record so far isn't showing much. Both the dog and the owner. You fix it.
Don"t just blame the owner
I had a dog who stayed in the kitchen with a gate and the mailman did not want to deliver the mail because he barked. Our dog died and he still put the mail on the porch instead of in the mail slot (talk about security issues!). There are always two sides to a story.
late bill because of dog bite
well, if no mail is going to be delivered, then it is untimely mail... now if you have a bill due, then take the overdue charges and take that dog owner to court for them to pay the overdue fee. in reality, we all know when we have a bill due. if in doubt, then call whom you owe money and make an arrangement to get a bill. many bills can be done via email..

So I agree with the first commenter, but the second? That is the most ignorant thing I've heard all day, and it's only just before 9am. Put the dog down? What is that gonna solve? I can understand citing the owner, but killing an animal for doing what it would naturally do, protect itself from a stranger? Stupid, just plain stupid. I'm not a dog person, I have 3 cats, an aquarium and a snake, but I will always be against senseless killing of pets.
