Farms bringing fall fruits and veggies to JCC

Posted to: Food Life Spotlight

Look for Cullipher, Flanagan and New Earth farms from Virginia Beach and Mattawoman Creek Farms from the Eastern Shore at Fresh on Fridays, a special fall farmers market at the Simon Family Jewish Community Center. The market is open 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday at 5000 Corporate Woods Drive in Virginia Beach. Find fall fruits and veggies as well as kosher breads and sweets.

Fall markets

The Whole Life Market at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 7400 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, will host fall markets 4-8 p.m. this Friday and Nov. 4. Among other autumn delights, find five varieties of sweet potatoes from Cullipher Farm and chicken and pork from Full Quiver Farm in Suffolk.

Fall festival

The Five Points Community Farm Market on Church Street will hold a fall festival Saturday. Taste Virginia wines and beer. Find apple cider, caramel apples and fall soups and stews. Peace & Plenty Farm will be on hand with eggs and grass-fed beef.

Best bread

Try what very well might be the best sourdough cinnamon bread in the state. Prize's Pantry Sourdough Cinnamon Breads won five ribbons at the State Fair. Made by Price Clark of Virginia Beach and Eastville, the breads are available at Gull Hummock in Cape Charles and Bella Monte's in Virginia Beach. The breads also can be ordered through Coastal Farms, an online co-op, at http://coastalfarms.luluslocalfood.com. Find out more about Prize's Pantry by emailing price02@yahoo.com.

Local tastes

Chef Matt Knack of Croc's 19th Street Bistro in Virginia Beach used ingredients from local farms to create a chili verde that was the 2011 Dish of Hampton Roads winner at the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction recently.

Local ingredients included pork Boston butt from Full Quiver Farm and tomatoes, peppers and onions and other veggies from New Earth and Cromwell farms in Virginia Beach and Mattawoman Creek Farm on the Eastern Shore. Herbs came from the Croc's garden and from Croc's owners Laura and Kal Habr's home garden.
