Green Run High School accredited once again

Posted to: Education News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

After appearing to fall short earlier this month, Green Run High School is fully accredited again.

School officials submitted additional data to the Virginia Department of Education, which reviewed the material over the weekend and found that the school had passed, a department spokeswoman said.

Beach school administrators were surprised earlier this month to see that Green Run apparently had failed to meet a new state graduation benchmark, which assigns scores to high schools based on the number of graduates, late graduates and dropouts.

Green Run scored an 84 on the 100-point graduation index, one point shy of the target.

The second review found that Green Run had scored an 86 on the index, school officials said.

"It really just came down to coding errors," said Jared Cotton, the school division's associate superintendent. He said the division initially missed some students who had completed GED coursework over the summer.

Also, some students who were counted as dropouts were found to have enrolled at private schools, he said.

"It's very challenging to monitor graduation and dropout rates," he said, "because it's something that's always changing."

Pulling those strings

Sounds a little "fuzzy" to me, too.
Who authorized a state agency to work
over the weekend in a time of reduced
budgets? Does Gov. Bob know they did this?

Do not rock the boat at the Beach. Just sayin'

According to the article, "School officials submitted additional data to the Virginia Department of Education, which reviewed the material this weekend and found the school had passed,a department spokeswoman said."

Who, on the weekend, that worked for the State Department of Education stayed and worked Saturday and Sunday to confirm the additional data? Who from the school system verified the info for the State over the weekend? How would this data have been substantiated or verified over the weekend? Just wondering how likely that is.

Really, this sounds like fuzzy math.

Really, this sounds like fuzzy math. Ultimately, the Principal,George Parker signed off on the initial paperwork. Sudden changes after not receiving full accreditation are suspicious. The State Department of Education should investigate every exception submitted. If Green Run received credit for a GED, did they provide instruction for the GED? Just Say'n.
George Parker has publicity stated he gives preferential consideration to minorities when HE determines that two candidates for employment are of equal caliber. He said he hires the minority. Really, get your reports to the State right first.

Mr. Parker, hire the truly most qualified and you will not be in the pickle you are in.
The best teachers deliver the best instruction.
