Marine killed at Yorktown station is identified

YORKTOWN

The Marine killed in a traffic accident Tuesday at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station was identified Wednesday as Cpl. Chad M. Smith, 23, of New Milford, Pa.

Smith died of his injuries at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News after being hit by a vehicle around 6:45 a.m., the Marine Corps said.

He was running in formation with a group of Marines as part of physical training on Halstead Road, a main thoroughfare at the weapons station.

Two other Marines were injured. One is in fair condition at Riverside Regional Medical Center and the other was treated and released, the Marine Corps said.

Smith was a rifleman assigned to Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST) Company, Marine Security Force Regiment, based at the weapons station.

The accident is still under investigation.
