In Hampton, Obama pushes plan for hiring veterans

HAMPTON

On the last morning of a three-day, two-state bus tour promoting his jobs bill, President Barack Obama spent considerably less time attacking Republicans, focusing instead on praising members of the military and their families.

Before a cheering crowd of about 2,400 in a hangar at Joint Base Langley, Obama and first lady Michelle Obama talked Wednesday about the need to provide more jobs for veterans and military spouses.

"There are far too many veterans who are coming home and having to struggle to find a job worthy of their talents. There are too many military spouses who have a hard time finding work after moving from base to base and city to city," Obama said. "That's not right. It doesn't make any sense... It doesn't make sense for our businesses... And it doesn't make sense for America."

Michelle Obama opened the event, formally announcing a pledge by 270 companies to hire 25,000 veterans or military spouses over the next two years.

She called it the largest coordinated effort to hire veterans in years.

The pledge was organized by the administration with the American Logistics Association, whose member companies sell consumer goods to military exchanges, commissaries and retail outlets on military bases.

The jobs initiative is tied to Joining Forces, a broader White House effort to assist the military, veterans and their families that is headed by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden.

In August, President Obama challenged private companies to provide at least 100,000 jobs for veterans or their spouses by the end of 2013.

The audience on Wednesday consisted mostly of airmen and soldiers who were under orders not to talk with reporters but clearly were excited to see the Obamas. As the couple walked out from underneath a large American flag toward a stage, most of the troops applauded loudly as scores of others, in unison, raised high their cellphones or cameras to record the event.

In earlier stops on the trip through North Carolina and Virginia, Obama railed against Republicans in Congress for blocking his $447 billion jobs legislation, accusing them of protecting the interests of the wealthy. Here, he emphasized bipartisanship, noting that the Senate is going to consider pieces of the jobs plan and saying that he'll urge them to start by approving tax breaks for small businesses that hire veterans.

The president noted that many Republican lawmakers had applauded the idea months ago during a speech to Congress.

"Don't just applaud about it, vote for it," he said.

The most prominent Republican in the hangar, Gov. Bob McDonnell, watched Obama's speech from the sidelines after he and his wife, Maureen, talked privately with the Obamas for 10 minutes before the rally.

McDonnell said afterward that he urged Obama to approve making Fort Monroe a national park and to provide federal disaster aid for Louisa County after the August earthquake. The president listened but made no commitment, he said.

McDonnell said he supports the tax break for those who hire vets but was critical of Obama for attacking his political opponents and for pushing for more federal spending.

"He's gotten much more partisan, much more negative ... much more hostile to the job creators," he said.

The governor acknowledged both political parties contribute to the stalemate in Congress.

"There's a crisis of leadership with the federal government. They can't pass a budget," McDonnell said. "But I lay a lot of the blame on the leadership role of the president."

Linda Bottoms, a 30-year civilian employee at the base who stood in the back of the hangar as Obama spoke, said she's tired of the bickering in Washington when so many people, including some in her family, can't find work.

The recession has led to her 30-year-old son and her 58-year-old brother losing their jobs while a niece and nephew who recently graduated college are waiting tables because they can't find more lucrative employment.

"I feel frustrated with Congress," she said. "They're not doing anything and they can't compromise.... Find something that works. If it doesn't work out, try something else."

The Republicans will not win the 2012 election!

Have you seen or heard their candidates speak?? As for all the haters,
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

The president still loves all you haters..LOL

I'm with the comment below mine...

Why vets? I know lots of vets right now who CHOSE to leave their employment with the military and are currently living off of their GI bills and earning higher degrees while lots of civilians have been unemployed and applying for everything under the sun for the past couple YEARS and have lost everything. Additionally, military spouses have always had an advantage of not generally needing to work full-time or get things like medical benefits through work because the military spouse is the primary breadwinner and has medical, etc for the family. I have nothing against the military, but they don't need any more advantages right now.

Hiring Vets

Sorry, but where were you when I had to spend so much time away from my family on deployments? Have you been shot at lately? You'd love it. When and only when, my friend, you have that shared experience of war and/or deployments, then and only then are you allowed to complain. If you don't like the hiring vets policy of the current administration, then by all means, when it comes to election day, vote against this administration. However, we vets are one of the reasons you can do that because we've paid the price for you to have your freedoms. Do not take your frustrations with unemployment out on veterans--we are not to blame for the current economy--blame the mortgage companies and the banks.

Why jobs just for vets?

What about the rest of the country? It make good politics to gather votes in our area but "jobs for vets" leaves out the rest of the unemployed public. At least many of those vets had the option to reenlist. That's more than can be said for many of the unemployed.

Q. "Why jobs just for vets?"

A. The unemployment rate for veterans is even higher than that for the general public.

The American Jobs Act included economic stimulus to support jobs for other sectors as well. Since it was denied debate in the Senate due to unanimous Republican filibuster, it will be broken up into components and brought up for vote seperately.

How many years does he need to be productive?

I feel so sorry for those who buy into his lies, and can't realize that he's trying to get re-elected with those lies. Re-elect this man and guess what? we're be in the same shape in 2016 as we are 2011, and then what? A president can not create jobs, he can not make private companies hire people (or vets). Who ever in charge of adding in the president's speech on the teleprompter, forgot to add that republicans were not alone in voting no to the jobs bill--> hint, hint(democrats) If Bill Clinton was running for president, the democrats would have a very good chance of taking the office again. Mr.President get on your Canadian made bus and go back to Washington and pack up.

Your lies

The concensus of economists is that the first stimulus did save or create about 2.5 million jobs and that the American Jobs Act will prevent a double-dip recession. (The unsubstantiated opinions of anonymous right-wing commenters disagree.)

"Republicans were not alone in voting no to the jobs bill--> hint, hint(democrats)." Actually, just two Senate Democrats voted against opening debate on the American Jobs Act, but 96% of Senate Democrats (and Independents) voted for it.

The Secret Service bought the bus from an American company (only the shell was built in Canada). President Bush and presidential candidate McCain were the ones who campaigned in Canadian made buses. I don't seem to recall the outrage at that time.

"tuition assistance for

"tuition assistance for Marines has just been cut by 75%.

The change went into effect today, 2011 Oct 18 and reduces the maximum education tuition assistance available from the Department of Defense standard of $3,500 per year down to just $875 per year for Marines. This is about enough to only cover two university classes per year."

Soooooooo Mr. NoBama.....you really (don't) Care about our Military!

And Biden is getting as looney as the President with exagerations and lies....Lord help us! They just Pick numbers out of the AIR!

If it's on the teleprompters...it's Fact?

Gov't. telling us who to hire

I'm all for our vets and their families getting good jobs. I'm a former military brat. But why should the gov't dangle a carrot in front of an employer to hire a vet when there may be someone else equally or better qualified for the job?

Guess what will happen when a lesser qualified veteran is hired (for the tax credit) over a more qualified minority person? It will hit the fan then.

This is a ploy to gain the public's and congressional favor for the "jobs plan". Who wants to be branded as having said, "I don't support our veterans"? But it's not just veterans who need jobs.

help me with the math

270 companies 25,000 jobs over 2 years= equals 4 jobs per month per company. How many are normal employees replaced thru attrition = no new net jobs = no dent in the unemployment rate. We need 125,000 per month just to dent the unemployment rate. Ask these companies how many veterans they have hired by accident over the last 2 years. Political boloney. Now asks how much production time was lost with the bus tour clogging up the highways preventing normal commerce just to announce this zero net job proposal. The tour probably affected over 25,000 people cost the same as those jobs would have paid. Net zero sum game. Plus the cost of the first lady flying to St.louis to clogged up that city the same day true defict spending.
