Update on Afton Theatre in Portsmouth set for Friday

Posted to: News Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH

An update on efforts to save the Afton Theatre will be presented to the public Friday at an Cradock High School alumni reception at downtown's Commodore Theatre.

Fred Schoenfeld, owner of the Commodore, said this weekend's Come Home to Cradock celebration seemed like a good opportunity to spread the word to people about restoration plans for the long-closed movie theater that was built in 1937.

Schoenfeld, who turned the Commodore into a revived centerpiece of downtown, has been helping David Beachler, the Afton's owner, in hopes of putting another old theater back in use in Portsmouth.

The reception will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
