Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

The Virginia Cooperative Extension has named Donald Horsley the state's 2011 Farmer of the Year, according to a news release from Virginia Tech.

Horsley operates Land of Promise Farms with his wife and sons. He grows corn, soybeans and wheat on the 5,300 acres he rents and owns in southern Virginia Beach. He also raises swine and some cattle.

Horsley is a member of the city's Planning Commission.

He goes on to compete for Southeastern Farmer of the Year, according to the release.

Where can I buy local

I wish this article contained a list of places where we could buy locally grown crops. I know of the Virginia Beach Farmers Market and the 5 points Farm Market, but it would have been nice to include these in the article. Where specifically can we buy Land of Promise produce, and where in general can we buy locally grown.

This week I stopped my subscription the the VP after 45 years, and the information left out of this article is a good example of why. I do read articles online, but I also look to several other online news venues for news. Maybe Altdaily.com will list places to buy locally.

Do Your Own Research

I am sure "Anonymous" was industrial enough to spend 10 seconds to google this and come up with http://www.buylocalvirginia.org/index.cfm/1,5,498,0,html/Hampton-Roads-Area.

Local Produce

Hi there,

Land of Promise Farms does not sell the kind of produce you are looking for, but instead grow corn, soybeans, etc to be used for feeding their animals.

If you are interested in local produce, try the Buy Fresh Buy Local website or the VA Grown website for stands near you.

Congrats Land of Promise Farms!

This family and ADS have

This family and ADS have made huge strides, have done what it takes to get 'er done. Where are the positive comments? Why are there hundreds of comments on personal vendettas such as LR and local politics but when our local boys do good, no one shows up? Do you all just complain to complain?

People...we rock, we dominate. Where are you? Did you just give up?

Ps. I sorry for speeding down your road. I do pay attention. The guy in the white BMW is out of line. I'm paying him a personal visit.

2011 Farmer of the Year

Congrats Don & Family - you represent the state well! Land of Promise Farms leads by example and a high standard. We appreciate all you give back to the community and the state. Thanks Horsley Family!!
