In late 1986, Donna Corbus thought she might try out for a role in a local play, so she checked out the script from the Norfolk Public Library.
In September 2011, she returned it.
"I am embarrassed to return this book, Butterflies are Free, after such a long time," the Portsmouth resident wrote in a letter to the library. "My daughter, who was a baby at the time I borrowed the book, now has a Master's degree and just bought her first house."
Corbus noted that, during the nearly 25 years she had the book, she moved once, raised her daughter, cared for her elderly mother (who had Alzheimer's) and father, and enrolled in college, from which she will graduate in December. It was during the move, she figures, that "Butterflies are Free" ended up in a box marked "Pictures," where it remained and remained and remained until Corbus came across it and - filled with guilt - set it free.
"I share this with you because I wanted you to know that I did not go on to lead a life of crime," she wrote.
Sean Bilby, collection development librarian for the library, said it is rare for a book to find its way back after such a long time.
But Corbus had to come clean. Although a friend suggested she leave it anonymously in the book drop after hours, Corbus faced the music - and the laughter - by bringing "Butterflies are Free" personally to the circulation desk.
During fine-free days, the library accepted donations to the food bank, and Corbus brought two big bags.
"Thank you for offering fine amnesty; it allows the guilt ridden, like me, a chance to redeem ourselves," Corbus wrote. "After 24 years, the butterflies aren't the only ones that are free, finally so am I!"
Bilby said the book probably will go back into circulation, because it has "enduring value." (It is a play that was adapted for a 1972 film starring Goldie Hawn.)
And Corbus? She never did try out for the play.

the answer is simple
sure it was gone a long time but, she treasures books. proof is after all this time she still has it, knows where it is, and knew it wasn't hers. I burned my library card decades ago for the same reason. books are a prized possession and parting with one once you get your hands on it is difficult. I buy all my books now. it would embarrass me to admit how much i have spent on them over a lifetime...
A Point?
There is, I'm sure, a point to this story somewhere. But it sure escapes me.
i'll give you a hint...
There's a clue hidden in the title of the article.
The library cop is actually named "Bookman"?!?
Oh, I saw this on Seinfeld. It's the the one where Jerry is tracked down for not turning in "Tropic of Cancer" in high school and the NYP Library officials sic the dreaded gumshoe Mr. Bookman after him, rumpled raincoat and all. My advice to the "perp" in this case is to buy a jar of Folgers crystals just in case Portsmouth has a "Bookman" who stops by to check out the story (inside joke).
She's lucky! A friend
She's lucky! A friend accidentally bought a stolen tricycle that ended up in the news. Once it made the news that it was stolen, he did the right thing and returned it. Both the Pilot and the police burned him on returning it.
After that, it turns out the lady gets them stolen all the time. She leaves them out in the yard all the time where they get stolen, and the article triggered an outpouring of caring. So he returns it, got burned by the Pilot reporter and the lady got her old one back, a free new one, and a whole bunch of free cash that could buy a few more.
He said if he had to do it over again he wouldn't have bought it, and if it was past that he wouldn't have returned it.
Whoops!
I know this person, and she wouldn't hurt a fly!
Nice !
A nice do-the-right-thing story with a happy ending, love it.
Thanks!
Fine?
What would the fine have been had they decided to prosecute?
Generally, it's cost of
Generally, it's cost of replacement.
Really!!!!!
With all that's happenings in the Hampton Roads area an over due library book is actually news worthy? Give me a break! Come on Pilot you can do far better than this.
