Back up your statements with facts.

There are a lot of insightful comments from the readers that make you wonder at the disparities of income between positions in the school districts of the region.

Anecdotal, detailed examples would be more credible than unsupported assumptions and suppositions. Please provide a more detailed example of how a teacher doubles or triples their income in the schools unless they are working that many more hours to make that happen. Even then, if such a case exists, it begs the question of whether they are giving the taxpayers back that much value for their extra efforts. Some of these suppositions are difficult to believe.

Even better for all of us would be some verifiable links and documents that support the assertions made or derived.

Other benefits not mentioned here...

Remember, in addition to these 9 mo salaries, teachers have incredible health, retirement, vacation, sick days, and other paid educational benefits - much more than most workers. Most of those fees are also covered by the localities (taxpayers) with little to no co-pay on the part of the teachers.

And, if teachers wish to work a 12 month job like most Americans, they can get double, sometimes a triple salary for the short summer sessions.

Plus, there is that nice arrangement where teachers can retire with full benefits and then come back and work more!

Yes, these salaries listings are only a snapshot of the worth of salary plus all those Virginia Retirement benefits.

That might be a great follow up article for the Pilot.

Salaries

Principals make too much money.

Salaries

There are a lot of teachers making 65k and up. That is really good considering the hours and having summers off. Teaching is tough due to the increasing class sizes and the ghetto parents, but I'll take the job at 65k.

Teachers

Most teachers certainly earn their money, but I've always felt they are not all created equal. Some teaching postions require significantly more planning that others. And, teachers who have taught for 35 years are doing essentially the same work they did in their first year. Experience improves their results to a degree, but they do not have more responsibility or additional workload because of their longevity. In fact many do less as they get older. Finally, I'll say that teachers were often not at the top of their college classes. I'm not trying to denigrate here, but a degree in mathematics education is significnatly easier than a degree in mathematics. So I think teachers are adequately paid, but often they are not well respected.

Who's Schools?

Jaw dropping to see Ptown and Norfolk near the bottom of the list all across the board until the final chart. That is just sickening that the people in charge make so much money when they have the lowest paid teachers and the smallest staff. Shame. It's no wonder why my family isn't considering to move to these two towns. The schools are a joke and here is another reason to back that up.

Portsmouth School Principle

Some time ago I was involved in a group conversation with a school principle here in Portsmouth. She was unable to express her thoughts clearly and her grammar indicated that she had little or no grasp of the fundamentals of the English language. In the course of the conversation, when she told the group about the advice that she gave a young student who wanted to have her boyfriend's baby, something about waiting till she was a little older, we were shocked. No mention of marriage or being able to provide for the child or the fact the child would depend on taxpayers for support.
Based on this example and others the salaries of Portsmouth teachers and administrators are too high and the dire and worsening economy of most taxpayers.

Hmm...

"Principle" and "...dire and worsening economy of most taxpayers."? If you can confirm you also graduated from Portsmouth schools, it will boost your argument considerably...

Norfolk- Admin Asst 1 vs High School Teacher salary

SAD! How is it that an Admin Asst. 1 makes only 3K less than your average Norfolk High School Teacher?! Norfolk has the lowest salaries for teaching compared to the other cities on this database. Why aren't we screaming for higher pay for Norfolk? Instead, all you find in the news is poor (figuratively speaking) Virginia Beach! That area pulls in all the revenue for it's not so wonderful beaches and overpriced housing. I have lived in Norfolk and in Virginia Beach. I don't understand all the hype for Virginia Beach. And the teachers there, for the most part, were a pain to deal with. Norfolk, which is richly diverse, has some of the best teachers yet they get paid the lowest in the area.

VB super???? Appalling!!!!

It's appalling that as a VB teacher, I am trying to figure out how to fill my next gas tank and budget groceries and our own superintendent has the highest salary in our region. Dr Merrill, can I borrow a few dollars? I need new shoes for my child!!!!
