Dominion to test small-scale solar-generation sites

Posted to: Business

Dominion Virginia Power announced plans Tuesday to install solar power generation systems at 30 to 50 sites in its service area for a multi-year study to assess the impact and benefits.

Dominion would lease rooftops and grounds at commercial and public buildings to install enough electricity-generating solar panels to power 6,000 homes during peak daylight hours. It filed an application Monday with Virginia State Corporation Commission seeking approval of the program.

Specific locations have not been identified. Participants would be paid for leasing space for the solar panels.

The company’s application included plans for a new rate under development for purchasing all the solar energy from customers who have panels on their property.
