On a hike in Va. Beach, Marines will collect toys for Christmas

VIRGINIA BEACH

They’re billing it as Santa’s big journey, only in reverse.

On Saturday, a Virginia Beach-based Marine unit will gather at the Oceanfront with empty packs for a hike to Rudee Inlet. They’re hoping that along the way, some generous helpers will turn out with toys for needy kids.

The reserve unit, Marine Air Control Squadron 24, has volunteered with Toys for Tots for years. But this is the first time its members are collecting donations like this, said Gunnery Sgt. Angela Mink, a public affairs officer with Marine Forces Command.

“We wanted to get a little creative,” Mink said. “We’re hoping that by the end of the hike, all the packs will be full.”

The walk will start at 40th Street at 10 a.m. and will last about an hour. Members of the community are welcome to cheer on the Marines and bring new, unwrapped toys for donation.

The Marines will help distribute the toys to local families before Christmas.
