Traditionally, this week is defined by the words "happy" and "thanks," but try telling that to the disgruntled and unappreciative fans attempting to detract from what should be a festive event - Saturday's playoff football game between Norfolk State and Old Dominion.
Since the pairing of the local teams was announced Sunday, the lunatic fringe and garden-variety malcontents on both sides of the rivalry have unburdened themselves of an assortment of ill-informed opinions, common complaints and long-held biases. Some while standing in line for tickets. Others while online, where they've released their cowardly bile under the cover of Internet anonymity.
You say this is only a vocal minority? Agreed. Or at least we can hope that's the case. Still, it doesn't take many ants to spoil the picnic.
A week ago, we relished the idea of this game. Now that it's almost here, let's hope the occasion hasn't turned into a case of "be careful what you ask for."
Where to begin with the litany of protests and criticism?
It started with ODU buying itself a home game in accordance with NCAA rules governing the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. ODU put in a big bid, thought to be over and above what was necessary.
Some Norfolk State fans are angry that ODU gets to play the Spartans on its home field while the larger Dick Price Stadium, located 4.2 miles away, goes unused. But many of the same fans are even more perturbed that Norfolk State athletic director Marty Miller did not put in a bid for a home game.
Allowing teams to buy home games is a quirky, inequitable way to run a tournament, but ODU was only playing by the rules. It was Norfolk State's decision not even to enter the fray, a judgment call rued by Spartan fans who stood in line for hours the other day, only to be denied tickets.
Ultimately, the process comes down to competition and commerce, not community togetherness; but whereas ODU was required by the NCAA to release only 500 tickets to the visiting team, Monarchs AD Wood Selig offered 1,800, plus space for the Spartans band. A class move.
Norfolk State fans, though, aren't the only ones complaining. Some ODU fans grouse that the Monarchs shouldn't be playing at all Saturday, that they should have received a bye into the second round on the strength of their 9-2 record.
The Gridiron Power Index - which has ODU at 15 - suggests otherwise. And look at Wofford and Maine, teams that did receive byes. Wofford lost by eight at Clemson and Maine fell by six at Pittsburgh. That, among other factors, trumps ODU's nonconference victories over Campbell and Georgia State.
And then there are those ODU fans who didn't want the Monarchs to play Saturday for another reason: It will interfere with their plans to attend the Virginia Tech-U.Va. game in Charlottesville. They're unhappy they have to choose.
It's a small number, to be sure, since more than 90 percent of ODU season-ticket holders purchased seats to the Norfolk State game. But even that impressive figure drew online fire from fellow ODU fans that it wasn't 100 percent.
You can't please everybody, but you'd think that a historic game between local teams would be universally celebrated, not nitpicked to death.
This week is a prelude to what's to come between Norfolk State and ODU, which begin playing on an annual basis in 2013. If the community of fans within the larger communities - the petty minority - can't overcome the friction and suspicions created by history, maybe a series between schools that share the same city isn't a good idea.
That's yet to be seen, and Saturday's game might put to rest any lingering concerns. But what's needed now is more graciousness - like that shown by Selig - on the part of fans for both teams.
Happy Thanksgiving. Happy thoughts about the big game.

Game
Home field is home field regardless of high school, college or pros. Nobody is giving that up if they don't have to. Regarding the conference championship that is a relative thing. I would take the 3rd place team in the SEC over any ACC champion any day of the week. The CAA placed 5 teams in the playoffs. That is a pretty tough conference by anyone's standards. The MEAC placed one team in the playoffs. ODU is ranked #10 in the nation and NSU is ranked #19. No offense to NSU fans but the MEAC just does not appear to be as competitive a conference as the CAA. I am not an alumni of either school so I don't look at it with any emotional attachments. I hope it is a great game. I wish it was on TV so we could all watch.
Home Field Advantage?
Let me start off by saying that NSU fans are mad at the fact that we WON THE CONFERENCE and we didn't get a home game, not that fact that we didn't submit a bid for a home game in the playoffs. Also, we are playing ODU at Foreman Field. This is a program that has great support, but their stadium sits 19,000. NSU is not playing Virginia Tech at Lane or UVA at Scott Stadium, so this whole home field advantage talk is being blown out of proportion. One more thing, let's stop the most negative/racial talk. We have two Top-20 teams in Division 1-AA (I still call it that) in the same city playing a historic game, can we just enjoy it?
NSU bid
Hey folks, it plain and simple. NSU did not submit a bid because the NCAA would not in any way grant a home playoff game to a lower ranked team. In every college game I've seen the better team always has the home game. Same goes for the high schools. That's all there is to it. If NSU had consistantly been a higher ranked team all during the year then I'm sure they would have put in bid.
The game
I did not attend either ODU or NSU so I have no emotional interest, I just like good football. This is real simple. ODU made the bid for a home game according to the rules and NSU chose not to submit a bid. NSU made a choice and it did not work out. ODU made a choice and hit a home run. If NSU alums have complaints lodge them with your university who made the choice not to bid. As far as the NSU stadium holding more fans and some feel the game should be moved to allow more fans to attend lets be honest. Would any program in any sport voluntarily give up a home game in a playoff round? Not very likely. ODU got a home game and I can not blame anyone in that program who wants to keep home field advantage. Good luck to both teams.
What are you talking about
What are you talking about BOB? In message Boards people know each other and who they are. Maybe you visit frequently and you think it's anonymity to you. Your article is Weak Bob, Weak!
I mean to say you don't
I mean to say you don't visit frequently.
The real problem....
If the locally, starved for news, TV sataions hadn't made such a big fuss the whole thing would have blown over. I watched one reporter following complaining fans around asking questions that were intended to stir the pot.
This was and is a Norfolk State problem and ODU should not have been mentioned. If they had to go to California to play would they have been complainig about tickets or play at the Rose Bowl because it holds more?
There has been more ink,and TV coverage, on the squeaky wheels than on the upcoming game itself. There's your story Bob, how the local news in this area is not ready for anything that resembles a big game.
Lunatics?
Bob.....we are not lunatics!!! Right is right, Wrong is wrong. The ODU program has been here for 3 years and the only way they play NSU was decided by the NCAA? Then the deck is stacked against the Spartans? 2000 tickets for our fans is fair? What are you smoking? Its not a small number of disgruntled fans. Why aren't you asking Marty Miller about his incompetence? ODU could have had all 19,000 of its Loyal fans attend if we made Dick Price stadium their home game and we could have had 11,000 seats fo NSU fans......They do it all the time in this city for HS games. We are not as mad at ODU as we are Marty Miller. Either way they can run but they cannot hide starting in 2013. Even the basketballteam won't play NSU. ODU = cowards!
Fair? What's your definition?
So 2000 tickets for an AWAY GAME to a university that chose not to bid on a home game is not fair? In what world could you possibly be serious? Are you that incapable of being objective? Your instinctive reliance on unearned entitlement should embarrass you and the entire NSU community. Rather than humbly thanking ODU for the good will gesture of additional tickets we didn't have to give, you choose to complain that you are entitled to more? ... out of supposed fairness? This inconsiderate and ungrateful narcissism is nauseating.
Football schedules are
Football schedules are typically made several years in advance, then teams only have a few spots open for non-conference opponents. With NSU playing Va State and a "money game" every year neither team had an opening until 2013.
Considering that ODU was only required to give NSU 500 tickets (a good portion would have been possibly taken up by the band) 2000 is MORE than fair.
They way I heard it NSU is the one that backed out of the basketball contact, which I don't know to be a fact.
