Norfolk campaign starts tonight; voting six months off

NORFOLK

The campaign for two superward City Council seats gets under way tonight, though voters won't go to the polls for six months.

Councilman Barclay C. Winn, who represents half the city, will announce tonight that he is seeking re-election to Superward 6, which covers Ghent, Larchmont, Ocean View and much of the northern part of the city.

He is hosting a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 7220 Granby St. near Wards Corner. He is expected to announce about 6:15.

Winn said he expects more than 400 people, including Mayor Paul Fraim and Vice Mayor Anthony L. Burfoot, who have endorsed him.

Outgoing Democratic State Del. Paula Miller had considered running against Winn but recently decided against it. "I am not running," Miller wrote in an email Wednesday.

No other candidates have announced.

Councilwoman Angelia Williams said she likely will announce in early December that she will run for re-election in Superward 7. Williams, a real estate agent, won a special election in December.

She is likely to have opposition. Sonya L. Smith, a former member of the city's Economic Development Authority, is scheduled to announce she will run Tuesday, according to campaign manager Robert Williams.

Smith is a Norview High graduate who served in the Air Force Reserve. She is a quality assurance coordinator for the Ryan White program for people being treated for HIV/AIDS at the Norfolk Community Health Center.

The six other members of the City Council, including Fraim, are not up for re-election until May 2014.

Winn was elected in 2000 and has had only token opposition in the two elections since. He said he expects someone to challenge him in May.

He said he will tout the construction of schools, recreation centers and libraries, and the proposed redevelopment of Wards Corner at tonight's kickoff.

"All in all, I feel pretty good about how things are going in the city."

Winn Winn??

oh you mean the guy who "didn't know" his company was landscaping city projects??...yeah that Winn...

Mr. Winn NEVER stated that

Mr. Winn NEVER stated that he "didn't know" it was work for the city. His company's bid was to a contractor, NOT the City of Norfolk. You should inquire about the hundreds of thousands of dollars of work he has passed up in jobs for the City of Norfolk since he was elected to council.

That project at Town Point

That project at Town Point Park was won by a bid, not given to him. We bid the job as a General Contractor and got pricing from at least 6 other companies from around the area. Winn's number was lower than them all and they do a great job.

A willing and credible opponent for Winn is direly needed.

The fact that his re-election is endorsed by Fraim and Burfoot speaks for itself.

YOu got my vote and my donation, PauLA

"Paula Miller had considered running against Winn but recently decided against it. "I am not running."

RUN PAULA, RUN!

Winn has no positives and many negatives. With the right candidate (singular), he is very vulnerable.

The "old guard" is slowly being replaced. Winn knows he will have a qualified opponent. Why? Because he knows he hasn't served the citizens but himself instead. Town Point Park comes to mind. He was also the representative to HRT when the double set of LRT books was going on in Norfolk.

I have a looooooong list of Winn's selfish and bad decisions against Norfolk citizens. But I've only got so many characters left in this post.

Let's see what he touts in front of the faithful tonight, if anything.

This comment just goes to

This comment just goes to show that you know very little about things. You are wrong about Town Point Park, and you are wrong about HRT. He had no knowledge of that problem until it was made public. Do your homework, Mr. Wizard!

good people should get ready to challenge

There is a real chance for people who want to serve and change what is going on in Norfolk. The Moss win in Virginia Beach shows that the estlablishment politicians can be beaten. The list of scandals in Norfolk make picking up the council seats easier than ever. Good luck.
