Norfolk State University rector Ed Hamm has stepped down from leading the school's Board of Visitors. Vice rector Gary McCollum will serve in the interim. Hamm said Monday that the board will vote on a new rector at its Dec. 9 meeting.

Hamm, 66, will remain on the board. He said Monday that "it was time" and that he was ready to slow down. He's semi-retired from his own business, E.L. Hamm and Associates Inc., an engineering and management consultant firm in Virginia Beach.

Hamm joined the board in 2009 and was reappointed last year for a four-year term.
