Posted to: News North Carolina

A Powells Point man was killed crossing U.S. 158 Saturday in front of his home.

Richard J. Townshend, 55, was crossing U.S. 158 just after 6:30 p.m. heading back toward his house when he was struck by vehicle headed north on the highway, said Sgt. T.C. White of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

That portion of the highway, at about nine miles north of the Wright Memorial Bridge, does not have street lights, White said. Townshend lived alone, White said.

No charges are pending.
