Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Real 'Red' success

As the John Logan play 'Red' comes to a close at the Wells Theatre, I'd like to acknowledge the collaborative effort among so many of this community's institutions to 'Paint the Town Red' in October.

It was a monthlong celebration of the color red and, more importantly, a celebration of our opportunity to live with passion through the extensive resources available within our community.

In addition to enjoying this Tony Award-winning play about the abstract artist Mark Rothko, we all have had the opportunity to see a special collection of the artist's work at the Chrysler Museum.

Red public art filled the streets of Norfolk, red lights filled the trees along Granby Street, and the fountains in front of Chrysler Hall sprayed red water into the air. The Battleship Wisconsin was lit red, and the Virginia Zoo even painted its elephants red.

Sixteen local restaurants offered special red desserts throughout the month, and Norfolk Botanical Garden, the Virginia Wine Festival, the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival, RedRail, d'ART center and others all joined in the celebration. On behalf of our board and staff, thank you to all who helped the Virginia Stage Company promote the strength and diversity of the cultural opportunities that we enjoy here in Hampton Roads.
