If Congress is unable to find a bipartisan solution to the nation’s debt crisis, U.S. Sen. Mark Warner says voters ought to start over with a clean slate.
“If we can’t get this fixed, you’ve got to fire us all,” Warner said. “I’m serious.”
He made the remarks this morning while speaking at the Virginia Women’s Conference at Old Dominion University. The Democrat apologized for veering into politics at the event, which was organized by his staff to empower women.
“This is not a political day, but I can’t get in front of three people without talking about this stuff,” he said.
Warner was among the bipartisan Gang of Six that unsuccessfully pushed a proposal that included up to $3.7 trillion in budget cuts and new revenues over the next decade.
Later, the freshman senator pressed Democratic leaders to appoint him to the powerful deficit-cutting supercommittee tasked with finding $1.2 trillion in deficit-reduction measures by Wednesday. He wasn’t included, and now the committee appears at a deadlock.
Warner, speaking to the group of women at ODU, warned about the consequences of failing to work together to reign in the national debt, which this week surpassed $15 trillion.
“Anyone who tells you we can fix this just by cutting more programs or by raising taxes on the rich – they’re just not telling you the truth,” he said.

Fire Congress
Well, At least Mark Warner got one right this time. Every American needs to FIRE every Member of Congress and FIRE Obama too... If our Fore Fathers knew and could see what was going on in this Country they would be turning over in their graves.. The Crooks in DC ought to be ASHAMED of themselves...
Across The Board Cuts Needed
We will only believe that Washington is serious about reducing the deficit when Congress reduces spending with across the board cuts that include salaries and benefits as well as programs. That will add to the unemployment problem, but reducing spending at all levels is what private industry had to do to stay alive. Government must do the same. Doing away with the Bush tax cuts will show those at the bottom how much they benefited from those cuts, which included earned income tax credits, child care credits and much more. The bottom tax rate dropped from 15% to 10%. Those cuts were not just for the rich as many like to believe. Ending the cuts will suck up most discretionary spending by the middle class, further hurting the economy.
We should...
fire all of them anyway. Start fresh and new, put real people in office that are in touch with and know what reality is for the working Americans. High paid politicians already have it made and could care less about anything but getting re-elected so they can continue to get big bucks and tell us what to do. Let's fire them all in 2012!
Fire you?
Better yet...how about the other 99 Senators and all 435 members of the lower House of Congress not run for reelection?
"supercommitee"
Just end the bush era tax cuts!Obviously the man could do nothing right.
The Bid Lie
The Affordable Healthcare Act is not adding to the deficit. This is the Republicans Big Lie.
Would that we could, but the
Would that we could, but the rigged system of transferring everything to the top 1% is run out of Congress, and as one of the 1%, your plans to impose austerity on those who did NOT wreck the economy is enough to make this Democrat very angry.

One term then go home
The fix for Congress, limit each person to one term. At the end of the term, tell them thank you for your public service and then they go home. No pension for life either.
Then we need to eliminate lobbyists. All types, no exceptions.
That is not the total fix but it is a start.....
That's just plain stupid
Just one term? What if the Congressman/woman in your district is doing a great job as far as you are concerned? You gonna kick 'em to the curb?
I retired from the Navy after 27 years with 80% disability. You telling me the VFW of American Legion should not be permitted to lobby our Congressmen/women?
My children were in the Boy/Girl Scouts. They have lobbyists. You telling us that they no say?
Think, man! Think! Don't lump everything into one happy sock.
