Posted to: Military

While you’re working on your Thanksgiving spread today, take a look at these.

The Naval History and Heritage Command has posted on its web site more than 30 menus of holiday and special dinners that were served on Navy ships and shore installations from 1905 to 1969.

This menu, from the Naval Training Station in Norfolk in 1945, offers roast young Tom turkey, mixed sweet pickles, stuffed celery and giblet gravy.

The first meal I had in the Navy was at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Center Thanksgiving day. I arrived in the cold, wet rainy weather, freezing and immediately hussled to the chow hall for my first Navy meal. Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings. Hey, this is not bad I thought. Been a long time.
